LAKEPORT, Calif. – A collection of original oil paintings from the estates of three well-known Lake County artists will go up on the auction block at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 29, at the Soper Reese Theatre.

Interested parties may preview the works beginning at noon. The auction features the work of Jerome M. Seitz, Gerald Thompson and Samuil Marcu.

Proceeds from the auction will benefit the Lake County Arts Council.

Admission is free.

Seitz was well traveled and spent extensive time in North Africa, the Middle East and much of Europe. His experiences are evident in his impressionistic paintings reminiscent of Monet, Manet and Pissarro. It is as if his hand moves over the canvas automatically, filling the space with brilliance of color and balance of composition that only the best scenic artist can portray.

Thompson painted more than 100 portraits in categories ranging from actors and actresses, famous and historical figures, Native Americans to animal life. A few of these paintings and an album of his body of work is currently on view at the Main Street Gallery in Lakeport. At the auction, buyers may select their desired painting from the album which can then be picked up at the Gallery.

While Marcu spent some of his later years in Lake County, he lived a great part of his life in the Los Angeles area and frequented Venice Beach. Many of his paintings are reflective of the beach life depicting people sunning on the sand. Much of his work shows an Impressionist influence as well as his ability to simplify the human form while imparting a sense of space and emotion.

For more information on the artists, please contact Shelby Posada, executive director of the Lake County Arts Council, at 707-263-1871.

For more information on the event, contact the Soper Reese Theatre Box Office, 275 S. Main St., Lakeport, 707-263-0577, www.soperreesetheatre.com .

KELSEYVILLE, Calif. – On Saturday, May 28, at 2 p.m., the Clear Lake State Park Interpretive Association's Summer Speaker Series continues with a presentation by Lia Gaertner on ticks and Lyme disease.

The presentation will be in the visitor center and is a “must attend” for anyone who spends time outdoors.

Lyme disease is one of the fastest growing vector-borne infectious diseases in the United States and is a potentially debilitating infection caused by bacteria transmitted through the bite of an infected tick to people and pets.

If caught early, most cases of Lyme disease can be effectively treated, but it is commonly misdiagnosed due to lack of awareness and unreliable diagnostic tests.

There are approximately 329,000 new cases of Lyme disease each year, according to statistics released in 2015 by the Centers for Disease Control.

As a result of the difficulty in diagnosing and treating Lyme disease, as many as one million Americans may be suffering from the impact of its debilitating long-term symptoms and complications, according to Bay Area Lyme Foundation estimates.

This presentation at the Clear Lake State Park will provide valuable information about tick ecology, tick-borne infections in California, and how to prevent and address tick bites.

Lia Gaertner has experienced, firsthand, the obstacles to effective diagnosis and treatment of tick-borne illness. She was first bitten by a Lyme-carrying tick in 1998, but was misdiagnosed until 2008.

Gaertner is on the Science Committee at the Bay Area Lyme Foundation. She also is a principal at Halteres Associates, a bioscience consulting company, and she has more than 20 years of international experience in scientific and field research, technical writing, teaching and project management.

She earned her bachelor of science in environmental science with minors in ethnobotany and agroecology from UC Berkeley and her MS in ethnobotany from Cornell University.

The Bay Area Lyme Foundation, a national organization committed to making Lyme disease easy to diagnose and simple to cure, is the leading public not-for-profit sponsor of innovative Lyme disease research in the US.

Clear Lake State Park is located at 5300 Soda Bay Road, Kelseyville, and entry into the park is free for those participating in the presentation.

Anyone having special needs should contact the Clear Lake State Park Sector Office Tuesday through Thursday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at 707-279-2267.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – Sutter Lakeside Hospital will host its monthly Wellness & Stroke Recovery support group on Wednesday, May 25, from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the hospital conference room.

Light refreshments will be provided.

Colin Morrow, a Ukiah-based attorney, will provide information on how to begin estate planning, including drafting wills and trusts, as well as answer questions for the group.

Morrow is a San Francisco native who graduated with honors from the University Of Maine School Of Law.

Proper estate planning is beneficial in a number of ways, according to the American Bar Association.

Planning ahead can help spouses, children, or other beneficiaries distribute assets quickly and smoothly, as well as minimize expenses. Establishing a will or trust can also help support charitable causes, reduce estate taxes and provide for family members.

Over half of Americans do not have an estate plan, according to the ABA. Neglecting to leave a plan can result in increased strain on remaining family members, or beneficiaries losing assets to the government or paying increased taxes.

Estate planning encompasses a number of important decisions, including appointing powers of attorney, arranging care in case of incapacitation, drafting an advanced directive, and writing a will.

“Estate planning can be overwhelming,” said Nikki Bullock, M.S.W., Sutter Lakeside Hospital. “Professional advice on how to start the process can be helpful, and we hope to give individuals a sense of direction for how to best plan for themselves and their families.”

The group is free and open to the public.

For questions about the group or for more information, please contact Nikki Bullock, M.S.W. by phone at 707-264-9492 or by email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

SACRAMENTO – In celebration of National 529 Day, ScholarShare, California’s 529 college savings plan, will offer a one-day only “You Start It, We Match It” promotion to help families jump-start their college savings efforts.

Families who open a new ScholarShare 529 college savings account on Wednesday, May 25, will receive a matching deposit of $50 from ScholarShare. The program is the highest performing 529 college savings plan in the country based on an analysis of its one-year investment performance by www.Savingforcollege.com .

“As college tuition continues to rise, and higher education becomes increasingly tied to future economic success, it is critical that families start thinking about college financing early in a child’s life,” said State Treasurer John Chiang, chair of the ScholarShare Investment Board. “By opening and contributing to a ScholarShare 529 account, families are creating a pathway for their children to afford a college degree without having to over-rely on burdensome student loans.”

Nearly a thousand families started saving for college by opening a ScholarShare account during last year’s first matching promotion for National 529 Day.

National 529 Day is a push by various states to raise awareness about the importance of saving for college.

To be eligible for the “You Start It, We Match It” promotion, families will need to open a new ScholarShare account with at least $50 – to be contributed and invested at the time the new account is opened – and sign up for ongoing automatic contributions of $25 or more per month.

The matching deposit of $50 will be made to the eligible ScholarShare account on or before 11:59 p.m. PST on January 30, 2017. There is a limit of one matching deposit per new ScholarShare account opened for a new beneficiary. Visit www.scholarshare.com/529day for complete terms and conditions.

ScholarShare offers a diverse set of investment options to fit a family’s priorities and college savings goals.

The plan provides tax-deferred growth and withdrawals are free from federal and California state taxes when the funds are used to pay for qualified higher education expenses, such as tuition and fees, books, computer equipment, or certain room and board costs. Any U.S. citizen with a valid Social Security number or taxpayer identification number can open a new account, for as little as $25.

ScholarShare has no annual account maintenance fee, no income limitations, and offers a maximum account contribution limit of $475,000.

Through ScholarShare’s “Give a Gift” option, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends can open a new account as a gift or make a contribution to an existing one.

To sign up for an account or for more information about the plan, visit www.scholarshare.com . For information about the ScholarShare Investment Board (SIB), visit www.treasurer.ca.gov/scholarshare . Like ScholarShare on Facebook at www.facebook.com/scholarshare529 and follow them on Twitter at @ScholarShare529.

Named for the section of the IRS code under which they were created, 529 plans offer valuable tax advantages. Contributions are made with money that has already been taxed. Once funds are placed in the account, investment earnings, if any, are not federally or state taxed, if withdrawn to pay for qualified higher education costs.

The ScholarShare 529 College Savings Plan Twitter and Facebook pages are managed by the State of California.
