CLEARLAKE – Women who serve as the primary wage earners for their families and seek financial assistance to go back to school can now obtain applications for the Women’s Opportunity Awards, Soroptimist International of Clear Lake’s major service project.

Applications are available at Yuba College or from Soroptimist Linda Bozorgnia, and must be returned to Soroptimist International of Clear Lake by Dec. 15.

Since 1972, the Soroptimist Women’s Opportunity Awards program has provided women who serve as the primary wage earners for their families with the financial resources to offset costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education or additional skills and training. The award can be used for tuition, books, childcare, carfare or any other education-related expense.

The Clear Lake club will provide three cash grants to its award recipients, who will then advance to the Soroptimist Founder Region level, where one recipient will receive $5,000. The program culminates with three finalist $10,000 awards.

This year’s awards will be given on March 7, 2009, at Soroptimist International's Clear Lake’s annual fundraiser, featuring Dr. Dean Edell. Get your tickets now.

Soroptimist International of Clear Lake is a volunteer organization for business and professional women dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls, in local communities and throughout the world.

Founded in 1964, the club is part of Soroptimist International of the Americas where almost 100,000 Soroptimists in about 120 countries and territories contribute time and financial support to community-based projects that benefit women.

In addition to participating in the Women’s Opportunity Awards program, Soroptimist International of Clear Lake helps women recovering from drug and alcohol abuse, domestic violence, provides mammograms, and a homeless shelter cabin. For more information about how Soroptimist improves the lives of women and girls, call Linda Bozorgnia at 994-3873.

CLEARLAKE – In the genuine spirit of co-creating the next level of the Lake County Community Co-op, join the group for an afternoon event of members and friends of the co-op to convene for the purpose of reflecting on and expressing thoughts and feelings surrounding the evolution of the organization past, present and future.

The meeting on the co-op's dynamics and direction will be held on Saturday, Oct. 25, from noon to 4 p.m. at Redbud Park or, if weather conditions warrant an indoor venue, at the co-op building at 14773 Lakeshore Drive, Clearlake.

Gently facilitated discussions, opportunities to speak using a talking stick and a shared meal will give participants an opportunity to celebrate and honestly process their thoughts and feelings concerning the dynamics of the organization.
