LAKEPORT, Calif. – All branches of the Lake County Library system will be closed Saturday, May 28, to observe Memorial Day.

Normal hours at all branches will resume on Tuesday, May 31. Call your local branch if you have any questions.

Even though the library will be closed you can still go online to the library Web site at http://library.lakecountyca.gov to download ebooks, audiobooks and magazines.

You also can check on your account, renew any items you have checked out or requests books from libraries in Lake, Sonoma and Mendocino to pick up at your local branch when the library does reopen.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – Star Touring & Riding Chapter No. 442 of Clear Lake will hold a chapter ride to the coast on Saturday, May 14.

Meet at Catfish Coffee Shop at 12595 E. Highway 20 in Clearlake Oaks at 9 a.m. Kickstands up at 9:30 a.m. after coffee.

The group will do the Ft. Bragg/Boonville loop. They will take Highway 20 to 101 to Willits, then Highway 20 to Ft. Bragg. There will be lunch and sightseeing in Ft. Bragg, then the group will head south on Highway 1 to Albion to Highway 128 to Boonville, then Highway 253 to Ukiah, then north Highway 101 to Highway 20 and back to Lake County.

The ride is 203 miles, weather is clear with a high of 63 degrees on the coast.

All licensed and insured riders with any type of motorcycle are welcome to join the ride.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – On May 10 at the age of 62 the most amazing man and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend passed away surrounded by his family.

He was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and became a resident of Lake County in 1959.

Dennis graduated from Lower Lake High School in 1971, he returned to Lake County after graduating Chico State.

As a person who loved the written word, Dennis found his calling working at the Redbud Library for the past 17 years.

Dennis is survived by the light of his life, best friend and wife, Denise; his daughters, Rebecca, Jennifer and Kathrine; son-in-law, Rick; and grandkids, Caitlin, Connor and Stephanie.

Gasoline supplies remain well above levels commonplace for this time of year, which should keep prices relatively steady as more drivers take to the roads.

Today’s gas prices registering on the AAA gas survey show the state pump price of unleaded regular is $2.80 per gallon, which is $0.03 higher  than a month ago.

The least expensive fuel can be found in Marysville, where the average price for a gallon of regular is $2.53. The highest price is in San Francisco where the average price is $2.96 a gallon, up $0.11 from last month’s AAA gas survey.

“Historically gasoline demand increases leading into the summer driving season, and this year so far is no different,” said Cynthia Harris, AAA Northern California spokesperson. “However, lower gas prices are contributing to drivers taking to the roads at record levels and the 2016 summer driving season is expected to rival 2007, when gasoline demand hit an all-time high.”

ExxonMobil’s Torrance California Refinery’s delayed gasoline production is due to unexpected recent operational delays, and gasoline production is not expected to be at full capacity until later in the month.

The return to full capacity of this refinery is expected to help offset some of the growing demand in the state and region.

The possibility of disrupted supply from the Canadian Oil Sands influenced the global price of crude oil over the past week; however, expectations of reduced supply were largely overshadowed by news of increased production out of Iran and other OPEC and non-OPEC nations. 

Iran reportedly reached pre-sanction production levels, and as production countries continue to fight for market share, the global oil market is likely to remain oversupplied.

Global oil prices rallied over the weekend due to news that the longtime Saudi Arabian oil minister would be replaced. This sentiment was short-lived as reports quickly surfaced that the world’s largest exporter would maintain its current course and attempt to defend its market share by sustaining production levels.

Oversupply is likely to continue to characterize the global oil market and attention will remain focused on output from non-OPEC countries and any other factors that may help bring supply and demand into balance.

At the close of Friday’s formal trading session on the NYMEX, WTI was up $0.34 and settled at $44.66 per barrel.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – Born June 3, 1937, in San Francisco, James (Jimmy) Frank Summers died Sunday, May 8, 2016, in Lakeport at the age of 78, a week after undergoing surgery for cancer of his right lung.

Shortly after leaving the city and arriving in Lakeport, at first to support his family's business, Jim became very active in banking and real estate, acting as manager, vice president and president for many local banks.

He eventually started his own mortgage brokerage from where he retired his suit and tie over a decade ago to pursue other interests closer to home.

Jimmy took great care in tending his home, his family and friends, not to mention taking a very active role in tending to this community. As a longtime member of Rotary and Chamber of Commerce, in his later years he was very proud to serve as chairman of the board for Sutter Lakeside Hospital.

Jim simply had a knack for business and people; he loved to make a deal and did so with integrity, through and through.

So many will miss his agreeable smile, shaking hands over coffee, over the sale of yet another one of his beloved cars or over loan papers putting them in their first home but may we all live more fully because of his touch upon our lives, showing us all better how to serve our families and community.

Neither his wife of 17 years, Janice Lee Summers, nor either of his children, Darlene Anne Cox or John Frank Summers, expected the news of his death so suddenly. "He really lived until he died," his family agrees. 

In addition to his wife and children he will be missed and survived by his grandchildren, Courteney, Jordan and Taylor Cox; and his stepchildren, Misha and Michael Cutburth.

UKIAH, Calif. – Mendo Lake Credit Union recently celebrated its 57th annual meeting for MLCU members.

Highlights of MLCU’s accomplishments from 2015 were outlined by Board of Directors Chairman Robert Scott, President/CEO Richard Cooper, Supervisory Committee Chairperson Ginger Kite and Marketing and Community Outreach Director Jamey Gill.

“We are extremely grateful to our members for your continued support,” Scott said.

With his two-year term as chair of the board reaching its conclusion, Scott emphasized his gratitude for the individuals involved in providing credit union’s services and outreach to the community.

“I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all the MLCU volunteers and staff for their combined efforts. Most importantly, my thanks go out to our membership for your enthusiastic support – for without you, none of this would be possible!” Scott said.

Scott also noted that MLCU was honored by Credit Union Times with the 2016 Trailblazer Award for Outstanding Service to the Underserved.

Cooper reported that the credit union’s assets increased from $188 million to $216 million last year, with membership growing to 28,000.

Cooper also noted, “MLCU originated over $65 million in new consumer and real estate loans during the year.”

Both Cooper and Scott remarked on the willingness and dedication of MLCU to assist the community. Last year saw devastating wildfires destroy hundreds of homes and businesses in southern Lake County.

MLCU was there to help members with loan extensions and offered hundreds of hours of volunteer time, as well as assistance coordinating distribution of aid funds from a variety of sources to fire survivors, in partnership with North Coast Opportunities.

Continuing its tradition of supporting the community, MLCU invested more than $85,000 in more than 100 Mendocino and Lake County nonprofits and service organizations.

MLCU staff contributed 600-plus volunteer hours at local events. The credit union also administers the Arlene Colombini Scholarship college scholarship, and staff conducts financial literacy programs aimed at all ages.

Kite reported that the 2015 independent audit confirmed MLCU’s financial statements to accurately represent the financial condition of the credit union.

Gill concluded the meeting with a short video presentation highlighting fire relief efforts, and thanking North Coast Opportunities for their continued partnership.

Cooper stated, “We are thankful to the National Credit Union Foundation as well as the Fire Family Foundation (a division of Firefighters First Credit Union) for their contributions to the relief efforts.”

MLCU’s acknowledges the work of its Board of Directors which includes Scott, Vice Chairman Monte Hill, Treasurer/Secretary Arlene Colombini, and Directors John Burke, Larry Myers, Madelin Holtkamp, Cameron Reeves, Dale Simpson, Carolyn Welch and Director Emeritus Jack Daniels.
