Upper Lake Community United Methodist Church plans Holy Week events

UPPER LAKE, Calif. – The most solemn week of the Christian year, Holy Week, is the week leading up to Easter, and is the week during which Christians particularly remember the last week of Jesus’ life.

Holy week begins with Palm Sunday, March 29, and commemorates Christ’s triumphant arrival in Jerusalem to the cheers of the crowd.

Later that week many of the people in that cheering crowd would be among those shouting that Jesus should be executed.

You are welcome to join Pastor Wanda Celli and the congregation of Upper Lake Community United Methodist as they travel through this time in Jesus’ life.

The worship service begins at 11 a.m. Sunday at 604 Clover Valley Road, on the corner of First Street and Clover Valley Road.

Continuing on the Holy Week journey brings they to Maundy Thursday, April 2, also known as Holy Thursday, and the 6 p.m. service which is the time that they remember as the day of the Last Supper.  The night of Maundy Thursday is the night on which Jesus was betrayed by Judas.

The most important events in Christianity are on Good Friday, April 3, a day of mourning, when Christians meditate on Jesus’ suffering and death on the cross and what this means for our faith.

Christians believe Jesus to be the Son of God, whose life and teachings are the foundation of Christianity. Good Friday is the Friday before Easter. The 6 p.m. service will commemorate the execution of Jesus by crucifixion.

There will be two services on Easter Sunday, April 5, both officiated by Pastor Wanda Celli.

The sunrise service will be held in the sanctuary at 6:45 a.m. followed by a light breakfast and the regular Easter service will commence at 11 a.m. and will include the flowering of the cross.

During the second service their awesome choir under the direction of Nick Reid and accompanied by pianist Michelle Wells Trigger will perform their rendition of the music “Holy City” and other hymns.

You are invited to attend their adult Bible study class held every Tuesday at 10 a.m. or join the Take Off Pounds Sensibly (T.O.P.S.) group when they meet Tuesdays at 4:30 p.m.

The Methodist church motto is “Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors.” All are welcome.
