Joseph plans talk on 'Mardi Gras, the Morning After' on Feb. 13

LAKEPORT – We’ve all heard of Mardi Gras, but other than a massive hangover, have we ever wondered what follows the morning after?

Fr. Leo M. Joseph O.S.F., will share his extensive knowledge of Lent, the traditional observance leading to the Easter celebration, in a lively discussion at the Middletown Community Methodist Church on Saturday, Feb. 13, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Joseph will trace the evolution of this holy season as observed by Christians all over the world.

In an afternoon of conversation and fellowship, he will explore the origin and significance of the fascinating customs that have grown up around Lent from various cultural traditions that are sources of American Christianity.

“I hope that familiarity with the beliefs and practices of the ancient church,” he said. “We can better make use of this time to discover ways to deepen our own spirituality and experience more fully the joy of rebirth at Easter.”

Joseph is the parish priest of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Lakeport. Through his extensive travels in Europe he has experienced the many customs and religious observances of our Christian forbears.

All are welcome to participate in the special event at the church which is located on Armstrong St. in Middletown. Light refreshments will be served.
