UPPER LAKE, Calif. – The Upper Lake Women's Protective Club has awarded its latest scholarship.

Last month, Linda Bushta, former Upper Lake librarian, presented a $500 scholarship to Brenna Sanchez.

This was the second of two scholarships that the Women’s Protective Club awarded for the 2018-19 academic year.

Sanchez is a 2018 graduate of Upper Lake High School.

She is currently enrolled at Mendocino College with plans to earn an AA in health sciences with the goal of choosing a career in health care.

She loves Lake County and has been a patron of the Upper Lake Library her entire life.

Elizabeth Moreno also received a $500 scholarship for the 2018-19 academic year.

One of the favorite functions of the Upper Lake Women’s Protective Club is awarding scholarships to girl grads from the Upper Lake High School who are heading off to college.

Back in 1916, the Women's Protective Club member’s and their husbands donated the land, as well as the funds and the actual building of the Upper Lake Library.

It was privately funded until the 1940s, when the library became a tax-funded operation.

The library then joined the Lake County Library System in 1975 after the county library system formed in the 1970s.
