NORTHERN CALIFORNIA – The Bay Area Pet Fair & Adoptathon will be held in San Rafael on Saturday, Oct. 5, and Sunday, Oct. 6.

The free event, which organizers say will feature the most adoptable pets ever in one spot, will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days at the Marin Center, 10 Avenue of the Flags, in San Rafael.

The Bay Area Pet Fair and Adoptathon will have more than 1,000 puppies, dogs, kittens, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, roosters and more available for adoption.

Lake County Animal Services is taking lots of orphans from the Orphan Dog Ranch, including tiny little Apollo; brothers Duck and Loon, two very calm and loving little doxie mixes; Jenna, a German Shepard mix; and Teddy, a Pekinese pug.

In addition to the LCAS Orphan Dogs, nearly every Northern California pet adoption and rescue organization will be there with pets that need forever homes. Some of these pets have been in the shelter for months.

The goal is for 600 pets to get a new home (last year they adopted 544 pets over the weekend).

For every pet adopted, $50 will be donated to the adopting group and each adopting family will get a $25 Pet Food Express gift card.

In addition to adoptions, there are all kinds of activities/entertainment for people and their pets, including Tillman the skateboarding bulldog; Splash Dogs will offer a dog dock-diving where the public’s dogs can jump in, compete and get wet; Bay Area police K-9 teams demos; dozens of pet treat, food, apparel and accessory vendors will have great giveaways; kids area with face painting, balloons and more; and live music with KFOG.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – Lake County Public Service Director Caroline C. Chavez reported that the Eastlake Landfill and the Public Services Department will be closed Monday, Oct. 14, in observance of the Columbus Day holiday.

Residential pickup will be on their regular scheduled day.

Both facilities will reopen on Tuesday, Oct. 15.

Normal operating hours at the landfill are 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.

The Public Services office is normally open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

UPPER LAKE, Calif. – Shannon Michele of Cache Creek Catering and Lake County Wine Studio are presenting a monthly food and wine series featuring gourmet appetizers paired with select Lake County wines. Locally produced foods are proudly featured as key ingredients in recipes created by Cache Creek Catering.

The series is held from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the second Friday of each month. The per person cost is $25 and $20 for Wine Studio club members. Reservations are required.

October 11 will feature a vegetarian menu and Merlots.

The opening course will pair Bell Hill Vineyards Merlot with a salad of seasonal greens with olive tapenade dressing and zucchini Parmesan risotto fritters, followed by eggplant rollatini with Yerba Santa Chèvre and aged goat cheese in a roasted tomato sauce served with Glamazon Merlot from Robinson Lake Vineyard.

The final course will be fresh fig with Cambozola and sweet spicy Livermore walnuts served with Lavender Blue Tawny Port.

September’s event featured a harvest menu pairing a salad of star crimson pears and heirloom apples on seasonal greens topped with bacon vinaigrette with Wildhurst Chardonnay, butternut squash raviolis in sage butter and roasted bosc pears with Cache Creek Vineyards Chardonnay, and concluded with a dessert pairing of a Bartlett pear sorbet with Thorn Hill Cuvée de Prestige sparkling wine.

HIDDEN VALLEY LAKE, Calif. – All are welcome to monthly Stone House Historical Society meetings the first Tuesday of each month.

CLEARLAKE OAKS, Calif. – County road crews will conduct a fog seal project in Clearlake Oaks on Wednesday, Oct. 2.

North Drive between Crestview Drive and Sulphur Bank Drive, and Crestview Drive between Lakeshore Drive and Windflower Point will be subject to up to one-hour delays between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. while the road work takes place.

Please drive with caution in this area.

MIDDLETOWN, Calif. – Spirit of the Season, a Christmas program for residents who are in need at the holidays and live in Middletown, Cobb or Hidden Valley Lake, will host registration in October.

Those who live outside these areas are asked to register for programs in Clearlake or Lakeport later in the year.

Spirit of the Season provides a complete Christmas dinner of turkey and all the fixings plus gifts for children who are in high school or younger.

The registrations will be held at the Middletown Community United Methodist Church on Armstrong Street over a two-day period only: Monday, Oct. 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Tuesday, Oct. 29, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Please bring proof of residence by providing a driver’s license or utility bill showing your current address. Also provide proof of income such as a payroll stub or bank statement as well.

The Wish Tree portion of Spirit of the Season offers gifts to children so parents are asked to bring three written ideas of potential gift requests. This year the “wishes” are limited to items $25 and under.

This grassroots holiday program in south county has been supported by local businesses, service clubs and individual members for over 30 years.

Donations have been the only means to support Spirit of the Season. Your help in providing food for families and gifts for children are necessary to continue to assist those in need.
