CLEARLAKE, Calif. – The regular meeting of the Clearlake Planning Commission, set for Tuesday, Nov. 19, has been canceled.

The commission's next regularly scheduled meeting is planned for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, in the council chambers at Clearlake City Hall, 14050 Olympic Drive.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – Each year Soroptimist clubs around the country honor young women between the ages of 14 and 17 who donate their time and energy to causes that make the community and world a better place.

These individuals do such things as work to end discrimination and poverty, assist women and children who are victims of domestic violence, and mentor young girls.

The award program is named after Violet Richardson, president of the first Soroptimist club in 1921.

Richardson believed in personal responsibility and the motto, “It's what you do that counts.”

She lived her life accordingly, as an active member in her community who was committed to creating opportunities for girls and young women.

Soroptimist established the award to honor the memory of this unique woman and her dedication to volunteer action.

The Violet Richardson Award program begins at the local level Soroptimist Club level, where the recipient receives a certificate and a cash award, club level winners then become eligible for several other awards at the region level.

Applications are due Dec. 1.

KELSEYVILLE, Calif. – Professional outdoors writer Terry Knight will present a talk on wild turkeys in Lake County at the monthly Redbud Audubon meeting on Thursday, Nov. 21.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church social hall, 4085 Main St., Kelseyville.

Terry Knight has researched and filmed wild turkeys since the early 1980s. He was part of the team led by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife that first introduced wild turkeys into Lake County.

His talk will focus on springtime courtship and mating behavior. He will show videos he has filmed locally and will bring turkey calls to demonstrate.

A wild turkey is considered to be one of the wariest birds in the woods. They have excellent eyesight, can outrun a dog and fly like a pheasant.

Wild turkeys are one of the largest birds. A male can weigh from 16 to 25 pounds, and, in spite of that weight, often roost at the top of tall trees.

These birds are found in flocks in open woods with fields or clearings. They are often seen strolling across open ground in flocks of up to 60 birds.

In Lake County these flocks are everywhere from local parks to housing developments..

Audubon meetings are free and the public is invited to attend.
