NORTH COAST – Caltrans reports that the following road projects will be taking place around Lake County during the coming week.


Included are Mendocino County projects that may impact Lake County commuters.


LAKE COUNTY


Highway 20


– A highway widening project from Government Street to Upper Lake Lucerne Road will continue. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 20-minute delays. Contractor – Argonaut Constructors of Santa Rosa.


– The county of Lake has been granted a Caltrans Encroachment Permit for sidewalk upgrades from Fourth Street to Sixth Street in Lucerne. Work hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., weekdays. Traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction of travel. Motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns.


Highway 29


– Bridge deck repairs at the Robinson Creek Bridge will continue on Monday, May 11, and Tuesday, May 12. Work hours are 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 15-minute delays. Contractor – DeBruin Construction Inc. of Stockton.


Highway 53


– Caltrans will perform routine maintenance from the junction of Route 29/53 to the junction of Route 20/53 beginning Monday, May 11. Work hours are 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays.


MENDOCINO COUNTY


Highway 1


– Construction of a retaining wall about 3 miles north of Elk will continue. One-way traffic control with a temporary signal will be in effect 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays. Contractor – Granite Construction of Ukiah.


– AT&T of Fort Bragg has been granted a Caltrans Encroachment Permit for utility work from Little River Airport Road to Cabrillo Drive. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., weekdays. Intermittent one-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.


– PG&E of Eureka has been granted a Caltrans Encroachment Permit for utility work near Old Coast Highway beginning Monday, May 11. Work hours are 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.


– The City of Fort Bragg has been granted a Caltrans Encroachment Permit for sidewalk and sewer upgrades from Walnut Street to Pine Avenue. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., weekdays. Southbound traffic will be restricted to one lane. Motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns.


– Storm damage repair about nine miles north of Hardy Creek Bridge will continue. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays. Contractor – Maggiora and Ghilotti Inc. of San Rafael.


Highway 20


– Bridge deck repairs at the Redwood Valley undercrossing will begin Thursday, May 14. Work hours are 7 a.m. to midnight, weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 15-minute delays. Contractor – DeBruin Construction Inc. of Stockton.


Highway 101


– Storm damage repair from 0.6 miles to 0.8 miles north of Comminsky Station Road will continue. Northbound traffic will be restricted to one lane 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns. Contractor – Mendocino Construction Services of Willits.


– Roadway repair due to pavement deterioration from 3.6 miles south of Ridgewood Ranch Road to 1.9 miles south of Ridgewood Ranch Road will continue. Traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction of travel 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns.


– Paving near Confusion Hill will take place beginning at 6 a.m. on Monday, May 11, and continuing through 3 p.m. on Friday, May 15. One-way traffic control using a pilot car will be in effect 24 hours per day. Motorists should anticipate 10-minute delays. Contractor – MCM Construction of North Highlands.


– Caltrans will continue routine maintenance from the Red Mountain Creek Bridge to the Humboldt/Mendocino County line. Work hours are 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., weekdays. Traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction of travel. Motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns.


Route 128 (40.0/48.5) – AT&T of Walnut Creek has been granted a Caltrans Encroachment Permit for utility work from 0.9 miles west of Big Oaks Drive to Mountain House Road through Friday, May 8. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.


Highway 162


– A bridge widening project at Outlet Creek Bridge will continue. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 15-minute delays. Contractor – Viking Construction Co. Inc. of Rancho Cordova.


Highway 175


– Bridge deck repairs at the Russian River Bridge will continue. Work hours are 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 15-minute delays. Contractor – DeBruin Construction Inc. of Stockton.


Highway 253


– A bridge widening project at Anderson Creek Bridge will continue. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 15-minute delays. Contractor – Viking Construction Co. Inc. of Rancho Cordova.


– A bridge widening project at Soda Creek Bridge will continue. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 15-minute delays. Contractor – Viking Construction Co. Inc. of Rancho Cordova.

CLEARLAKE – The ninth annual smorgasbord and raffle to support the Alzheimer's Day Care Program of Clearlake will take place Saturday, May 9.


The event will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church, 14310 Memory Lane, Clearlake. The first seating is at 5 p.m. with the second seating at 6:30 p.m. Each seating can handle 60 people.


The cost is $25 per person is children 11 and under eating for $7.50.


The meal will feature Scandinavian specialties such as Swedish meatballs, baked salmon, herring, shrimp, scalloped potatoes, lefsa and bread, salads, relishes, cheese and eggs, Scandinavian cookies and desserts.


The Alzheimer's Day Care Program of Clearlake relies heavily on the fundraiser to stay open two days a week. Many volunteer hours go into the dinner to make it a success.


The program has helped Lake County families with members suffering from Alzheimer's and cognitive impairments for 12 years.


Reservations are required and donations are tax-deductible.

LAKE COUNTY – This Saturday, May 9, KPFZ, 88.1 FM will honor and remember attorney Steve Tulanian for his contributions to the legal community and to Lake County.


The memorial show will take place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.


Defense attorneys, district attorneys, clients, judges and others will be in the studio and phoning in to talk about their experiences with Tulanian, who died May 2.


Please listen and consider phoning in at 707-263-3435 to participate on the air.


Stories about your personal experiences with Mr. Tulanian both in and out of court will help to make the program more meaningful.

LAKE COUNTY – Children's Book Week 2009 takes place from May 11 through May 17.


The Lake County Library invites all children to visit the library and check out the selection of children's books.


“Miss Barbara” will read some of the library’s new children’s books at Lakeport Library’s preschool story time on Friday May 15 from 10:15 a.m. To 11 a.m. Redbud Library’s preschool story time is Thursday morning from 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.


With a library card, patrons have access to the collections of all three counties, amounting to more than one million books. From the library’s online catalog http://ipac.sonoma.lib.ca.us/ipac20/ipac.jsp?profile=laco#focus or from an in-library catalog computer, a patron can request books from anywhere in the system and have them delivered to any library branch.

LAKE COUNTY – The San Francisco and Sacramento area Mercedes-Benz club members made an overnight visit to Lake County on Saturday, May 2.


Leaving Fairfield the drive came into Lake County going by Lake Berryessa, traveling the way of Morgan Valley Road to Lower Lake.


After visiting Brassfield Vineyard and Ceago Vineyard the group settled in for the night at Robinson Rancheria Resort & Casino, Tallman and Featherbed Railroad. The group enjoyed dinner at the Boat House and the Blue Wing.


Leaving Sunday morning there was a visit at the Wildhurst Vineyard. After a lunch stop at Perry’s Deli they departed Lake County by Highway 29.


The group was impressed with the beauty of Lake County and how friendly the residents of the County were to them, and would like to extend their appreciation to all the business that were visited.


"Our drive through Lake County was a highlight for our group,” said club President Robert E. Schilling. “Throughout the day I heard comments about the beauty of the area, the friendliness of the people, and the desire to return to this area that was new to many of our participants."

LAKE COUNTY – The University of California Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners of Lake County and the Lake County 4-H Program proudly present their first GROW workshop, “Successful Vegetable Gardening for Beginners.”


The event is open to the public and will take place Saturday, May 9, starting at 3 p.m. at the Agricultural Center, 883 Lakeport Blvd., Lakeport.


There will be short presentations and hands-on demonstrations, along with activity tables for adults and children.
