John Howard Tomkins, age 89, of Lucerne, California, passed away on Monday, Dec. 25, 2023.

John, “Jack,” was born in Schenectady, New York to John “Bert” and Olive Tomkins, and graduated from Scotia High School.

He joined the Selective Service in 1953 and then continued his studies at Syracuse University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting in 1960.

Shortly after John moved to Houston, Texas, he met and married the mother of his three daughters, Sarah “Jane” Faris.

In 1968, the family moved to Orange, California, and he worked with the YMCA. The family moved to Lake County, California, in 1974 and he purchased a local income tax preparation business.

John's service to the community was vast, including board trustee for Upper Lake schools, Mendocino College, Lake Family Resource Center, North Shore Business Association, Sutter Lakeside Hospital and other advisory positions.

He loved people and enjoyed seeing them flourish. He supported many organizations, including the 4-H auction, student sports, theater productions and his church.

John is predeceased by his parents; brother, Keith Tomkins, and sister, Sheila Lindsay.

He is survived by his partner, Marideth Wilson; sister, Gwen Cardarelli; and daughters, Alice Tomkins, Diane Tomkins Plante and Laura Plante.

We would like to express our appreciation to Oakmont of Carmichael, Assisted Living, for the excellent care provided to John in the last few months, along with the Hospice services from Latreia Healthcare.

A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, at Upper Lake Methodist Church.

In John’s memory, friends may make a memorial contribution to the Upper Lake Methodist Church or Lake Family Resource Center.
