UKIAH, Calif. – Lowell Duane Mahan died on Jan. 10, 2019, in Ukiah at the age of 78.

He was born in Bonham, Texas, to Henry and Mary Bernice Mahan on Oct. 8, 1940, but moved with the family to California at age 2.

After graduating from Delano High School he moved to Ventura where his brother lived.

Duane and Connie Holmes were married Aug. 18, 1959, while he worked for a grocery store, starting as a box boy and later being promoted to produce manager.

During this time he was a reserve policeman in Ventura, which led to his attending a law enforcement academy, and his becoming a police officer.

Duane’s law enforcement career was cut short by a serious vehicle accident while on duty which left him disabled for life.

This did not stop Duane, as he and his family moved north to Clearlake, California, in 1971, where he soon found work selling insurance.

One thing led to another until he owned and operated three insurance offices in Ukiah, Lakeport and Clearlake.

In 2010 Duane and Connie sold their insurance businesses and retired. Duane was an active member of the Chambers of Commerce and the Elks Clubs of Clearlake and Ukiah, New Life Community Church in Ukiah, the Ukiah Rifle and Pistol Club, as well as being a life member of the NRA.

He also served as vice president of the Clearlake Peace Officers’ Association, as law enforcement was always dear to his heart.

Duane was predeceased by his parents; his son, Jimmy; and his brother, Bob Mahan.

He is survived by three brothers, Harold, Jim and Henry Alvin; and Connie, his wife of over 59 years; their son, Darin(Jennifer); grandchildren, Sara and Jesse (Ashley); and great-grandchildren, Seth, Macie, Olivia and Madison.

Services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 11 a.m. at New Life Community Church, 750 Yosemite Dr, Ukiah, with long time family friend Pastor Ralph Huddleston officiating.

Duane Mahan will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather as well as by his breakfast group at Denny’s almost every morning.
