Cal Fire plans prescribed burn at Warm Springs Dam

NORTH COAST, Calif. – Cal Fire’s Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit, will be conducting a prescribed burn on Wednesday, July 15, at the Warm Springs Dam on Lake Sonoma in Sonoma County.

The burn is an ongoing project conducted for the Army Corps of Engineers to maintain the structural integrity of the Warm Springs Dam.

The prescribed burn removes vegetation that would otherwise hinder required visual inspection of the face of the dam.

Burning is expected to start at 6 a.m. and be completed by noon.

Resources will be onsite throughout the evening. If traveling in the area, please use caution.

Cal Fire’s Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit will be joined by the following cooperating agencies on this project:

– United States Army Corps of Engineers;
– Northern Sonoma County Air Pollution Control District;
– Northern Sonoma County Fire Protection District.

Prescribed vegetation management burns are carefully planned and must meet strict criteria for ecological benefit, weather parameters, smoke management and fire safety guidelines. The planned date is subject to last-minute changes due to those considerations.

When all conditions are met, trained wildland firefighters conduct the burn while monitoring the set criteria, fire behavior and designated fire control lines.

The prescribed burn will comply with the requirements of the Northern Sonoma County Air Pollution Control District.
