LAKEPORT, Calif. – The boys gymnasts at Lakeport’s Skycatch Gymnastics are off to a strong start as their new competitive season gets under way.
The team includes Catch Berton-Devore and Tanner Broyles, who went from level six to level nine this year; Philip Sparkes, a first year level five; Alex Fordham, level five; and Trey Broyles, level five.
On Dec. 9 the boys traveled to Redwood Empire Gymnastics in Petaluma for their season opener.
Catch captured the first place all around, placing third on rings, first on floor, tying for third on parallel bar, fourth on pommel horse and second on high bar.
Tanner took fifth all around, placing fourth on vault, second on rings, third on floor and third on pommel.
Philip took sixth all around, and Alex took second on all around, placing third on floor, high bar and pommel horse, second on parallel bar and third on rings.
They followed up by competing at the Oroville Invitational on Jan. 6.
Catch placed sixth all around, earning fourth on floor, third on rings, sixth on parallel bars, fifth on pommel horse, fourth on vault and fifth on high bar.
Tanner took seventh all around, coming in at seventh on floor, fourth on rings, seventh on parallel bars, third on pommel horse, fourth on vault and seventh on high bar.
Trey placed third all around, taking fifth on floor, fourth on rings, fifth on parallel bars, fourth on pommel horse, second on vault and third on high bar.
Alex had a second place all around finish, placing third on floor, second on rings, third on parallel bars, second on pommel horse, first on vault and first on high bar.
Philip placed fifth all around, with placements including sixth on floor, fifth on rings, sixth on parallel bars, third on pommel horse, and fifth on both vault and high bar.
“They’ve got to keep training hard,” said Annette Broyles, mom to Tanner and Trey, noting the older boys especially have big skills to perform in competition this year.
The boys’ season continues until March, when the girls’ season will get under way. The girls’ team had its season cut short by last year’s fires but Broyles said they competed well.
