SANGER, Calif. – Transporting material from the yard to a jobsite is a basic part of any project, and one would think that having the yard located just on the other side of the road from the jobsite would be a blessing.
But what if that road is a busy two-lane highway known for its traffic congestion?
This was the problem a Caltrans-led project team was tasked with solving during the design phase of the Kings Canyon Expressway project on State Route 180.
The solution, a conveyor system that safely transports material over the highway, not only relieves traffic congestion but it also reduces vehicle emissions and substantially improves safety.
The latest Caltrans News Flash highlights this innovative device that will transport 800,000 tons of material over the course of the project, removing 35,000 truck trips.
The clip also underscores the strong partnerships Caltrans has with its contractors who are encouraged to think outside of the box.
