CLEARLAKE, Calif. – On Saturday, June 2, a group of volunteers landscaped the front yard of Habitat House No. 16, located at 3145 Fourth St. in Clearlake.

The volunteers included members of the Hidden Valley Lake Garden Club, Angela Birk, Zoila and Bill McGraw and Marilyn Luera, along with Habitat for Humanity volunteers Katy Potter and Oliver Wells.

HVL Garden Club’s community outreach for 2012 included a donation of $150.00 to help cover the cost of landscaping materials for Habitat for Humanity.

Most of the low-maintenance, drought tolerant plants were purchased at a good discount from Star Gardens Nursery, Middletown. A few additional plants were donated by Lovie's Nursery also located in Middletown.

Garden Members Marilyn Luera donated stepping stones, and Elisabeth Moores designed the plans for the landscaping.

Unfortunately, the future homeowners missed the day as they had a medical emergency and spent several hours at a local hospital. Luckily all have recovered.

The mission of the HVL Garden Club is to provide members a greater sense of appreciation, pride and knowledge about our private and public gardens and for the study and enjoyment of amateur gardening in various aspects and applications.

The Habitat houses are a commitment to this mission by providing the new owners with a good start for their gardens.

All Lake County gardeners are welcome and encouraged to attend meetings of the Hidden Valley Lake Garden Club.

Meetings are held the second Monday of each month in the administration building of the Hidden Valley Lake Association, 18174 Hidden Valley Road.

Meetings begin with a social gathering and refreshments at 9:30 a.m. followed by a business meeting and program 10 a.m.
