Members of the Clearlake City Council and city leadership were on hand at the Clearlake Walmart store along with representatives of the Redwood Empire Food Bank, which received a $200,000 from the Walmart Foundation.
Redwood Empire Food Bank Chief Executive Officer David Goodman said that the $200,000 donation would be converted into more than $2 million of food in Lake County.
The funding from the Walmart Foundation supports the Redwood Empire Food Bank’s Lake County Hunger Initiative, which includes three critical hunger-relief programs.
The BackPack and School Pantry programs provide weekly nourishment directly to children and their families during the school year, and Produce Pantry offers year-round nutritional support to all low-income people in need through a weekly provision of fresh produce and healthy staple foods.
Food insecurity is an issue facing families in communities across the country.
According to the US Department of Agriculture, one in eight Americans currently struggles with hunger.
