LAKEPORT, Calif. – Two local high schools will face off next week in a competition that tests students’ ability to argue the merits of a legal case in a real local courtroom.
The fifth annual Lake County Mock Trial Competition will take place on Monday, Feb. 13, at the Lake County Superior Court at the Lakeport Courthouse on N. Forbes Street.
Upper Lake and Middletown high schools will take part in this year’s event, according to Tammy Serpa of the Lake County Office of Education.
Middletown is returning as last year’s county champion.
Serpa reported that Judge Stephen Hedstrom and Judge Richard Martin will preside over the competition, which takes place in two rounds.
The first round of competition will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. in Department 4, with the second round scheduled for 1 to 3 p.m. in Department 2.
The awards ceremony will follow the competition at 3 p.m.
The teams this year will argue the fictional court case “People v. Awbrey,” which involves human trafficking and false imprisonment.
The winning team will travel to the state competition in Riverside March 24 to 26.
