CLEAR LAKE STATE PARK – Meet retired park ranger Val Nixon at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 3, at the park visitor center ramp for a guided nature walk in the park.

Through Nixon’s years of work in the state park system, she understands the significance of the natural world and gives those walking with her an even greater understanding of the importance of Lake County natural resources. With her you will view the high lake level that creates an ever-changing shoreline.

Guided walks are scheduled for the first Saturday of each month. There is no entrance fee to the park for participating in walks.

When volunteers are available, the visitor center and gift shop will be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Volunteers maintain this schedule.

There is a great need to add to the volunteer core for the visitor center and gift shop. Volunteers work in pairs in three-hour shifts. The volunteers greet visitors, provide information and guide them through the museum, as well as answer questions about the exhibits and Lake County.

The center hosts visitors from all over the world. As an example, it is not unusual to have visitors from Russia, England and Germany.

If interested in volunteering for a great experience in the visitor center, please leave your name and contact information for Ranger Ryen Goering at 707-279-2267.

The natural history museum dioramas contain many species of animals, such as the black bear, mountain lion and great horned owl that thrive in Lake County.

The gift shop contains a variety of nature-related merchandise and is staffed by volunteers. The varied inventory changes frequently. All proceeds from sales are used to upgrade the park and educational facilities within the park.

Clear Lake State Park is located at 5300 Soda Bay Road, Kelseyville.
