LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – Firefighters continued to make steady progress on fires around the region on Tuesday, including one nearing full containment in Lake County.
On Tuesday night, Cal Fire said the Murphy fire near Lower Lake remained at close to 40 acres and was up to 90-percent containment.
The fire began Monday afternoon on Highway 29 at Agua Dulce Drive, three miles south of Lower Lake. No structures have been damaged.
Officials so far have not given a cause for the fire.
Next door in Mendocino County, firefighters continued to get closer to fully containing the Grade fire, which began on Sunday afternoon off of Highway 101, five miles northwest of Redwood Valley.
Cal Fire said firefighters have held the fire at 900 acres, with containment up to 85 percent on Tuesday night.
On Tuesday Cal Fire officials reported that the Grade fire began as the result of a vehicle fire.
That confirmed witness reports pointing to a pickup towing a travel trailer that pulled off the highway, catching the nearby hillside on fire, as Lake County News has reported.
Resources assigned to the incident on Tuesday included 433 personnel, 40 fire engines, 25 fire crews, 16 dozers, six water tenders and one helicopter, Cal Fire said.
Also in Mendocino County, firefighters are continuing to work on the Range fire, located on Cow Mountain west of Ukiah.
Cal Fire said the Range fire had grown to 20 acres and was 85-percent contained as of Tuesday night.
In other fire news from around the region, firefighters in neighboring Colusa County also remain engaged in the work of fully containing the Sand Fire, which began Monday afternoon.
The Sand fire, located west of Arbuckle, was reported to be 70 acres and 80-percent contained on Tuesday night, Cal Fire said.
Resources Cal Fire said are assigned to the Sand fire include 76 personnel, 10 fire engines, five air tankers, four fire crews, four bulldozers, three water tenders and two helicopters.
