LAKEPORT, Calif. – Alex Suchan and Rafael Valadez will talk about Lake County’s walnut industry in the April installment of the Lake County Library’s Know Lake County series.
The free program will be held Saturday, April 15, at the Lakeport branch of Lake County Library at 1425 N. High St., from 2 to 4 p.m.
Alex Suchan has acquired several nicknames in his 60-plus years in the walnut business, among them the “Walnut Guru” and the “Walnut King.” He may know more about walnuts than anyone else in Lake County.
He attributes his good health to eating walnuts, loaded with omega-3s and vitamins. Valadez learned what he knows from working for Suchan for 35 years.
The program will include history of walnuts in northern California, walnut development in Lake County, and information about newer varieties.
Lake County produces several varieties of English walnuts, including traditional varieties like Poe, Franquette and Hartley, and newer varieties like Chandler, Howard and 76-80. English walnuts are grafted to black walnut rootstock for hardiness and disease resistance.
Walnuts have been grown in Lake County since the late nineteenth century. Oscar Poe developed the Poe walnut around 1900.
The Know Lake County lectures feature speakers from a wide array of organizations and disciplines, each representing some aspect of Lake County.
