Police took Stephen James Kennedy, 46, into custody early Friday morning for driving while under the influence of alcohol and hit-and-run, according to a report from Sgt. Jason Ferguson of the Lakeport Police Department.
Kennedy is alleged to have crashed his Dodge Ram pickup truck into the Peggy Campbell accounting office, located at 401 N. Main St., before fleeing the scene, Ferguson said.
Ferguson said the incident is alleged to have occurred shortly after 8 a.m. am Friday when Lakeport Police Officer Norm Taylor responded to the north Lakeport area after receiving a call for the hit-and-run collision.
Taylor located the vehicle parked partially on the sidewalk on Clearlake Avenue near High Street, where it was blocked in by an A-1 Tow Truck being driven by Gerald Byers, according to Ferguson.
Ferguson said Byers witnessed the crash and followed Kennedy, positioning his tow truck so as to prevent Kennedy from leaving the scene and causing any further accidents.
Kennedy was located standing next to the truck, Ferguson said.
During the investigation Ferguson said it was determined that Kennedy was under the influence of alcohol and was placed under arrest for DUI and hit-and-run.
Kennedy's bail was set at $5,000. He posted bail and was released later on Friday, according to Lake County Jail records.
