LAKE COUNTY, Calif. — The Unitarian Universalist Community of Lake County recently ordained Upper Lake resident Clovice A. Lewis Jr., as a Unitarian Universalist minister.
Lewis received a Master of Divinity graduate degree in 2021 at Starr King School for the Ministry in Berkeley.
He completed a year-long internship at the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Community in Oak Ridge, Tennessee in 2021, and is presently serving as a chaplain for the Hospice of Ukiah.
In the Unitarian Universalist tradition, the congregation recognizes an individual as a minister called to serve, and confers ministerial authority via the ordination ceremony.
Lewis has had broad experiences which have informed his spiritual path. He is a composer and cellist, former professor of computer music at University of California, Santa Barbara, chief executive officer of numerous technology companies, private pilot and inventor.
He has published several books on racial justice and theology and led diversity training workshops. He has composed symphonies and other large musical works which have been performed by orchestras around the United States.
Lewis’ ministry emphasizes the dismantling of racial, class and ethnic barriers, using art to counter oppression.
He preaches “the gospel of the madness of human self-extinction” and plans to use his ministry to promote social justice.
Lewis has been a member, leader and music director of the UU Community of Lake County for over 20 years. He has preached there as well as in many other UU churches in California and beyond. He will continue preaching, speaking and leading groups in the work of dismantling racial, class, gender and ethnic barriers.
After two years of not meeting in person, the Unitarian Universalist Community of Lake County will begin holding Sunday services at the church on April 10.
In-person services will be held the first Sunday of the month at the church located at 3810 Main St. in Kelseyville. Guests are welcome.
The service will begin at 11 am. The topic, “Love Is Letting Go of Fear,” will be presented by the Rev. Denis Eucalyptus.
