How to resolve AdBlock issue?
Registration by telephone or walk-in at the Lake Center on Parallel Drive is currently in progress. Early registration for the spring semester is advised to help guarantee placement because some college classes fill before the semester begins.
The Lake Center offers about 200 college classes each year, with most spring classes starting this month. A few others begin a bit later in a shorter format for students who may not be able to attend for the full 17-week semester.
Saturday classes in Lakeport this spring include choices in child development, an English class in academic reading and writing, Career Planning, two levels of Excel, first aid and CPR.
"One of the things most important to students these days is a choice for scheduling that meets their needs," said Lake Center Dean of Instruction Mark Rawitsch. "That’s why we also offer some of our general education classes in Lakeport only one day a week in three-hour blocks. Some students can’t afford the time and gasoline it takes to come to college several days a week.”
With careful planning with the school's academic counselors, students can set a class schedule allowing them to meet other important family or employment commitments without missing the chance to attend college classes, said Rawitsch.
Many Lakeport classes are held on weekdays, others are only offered during the evening hours with most beginning after 5:30 p.m. or 6 p.m.
In Lake County Mendocino College offers classes designed to meet the needs of university transfer students and those interested in job skill improvement, personal enrichment and lifelong learning.
Classes every day of the week cover the traditional range of general education college degree topics including English, math, history, health, earth science, psychology, child development, Spanish, American Sign Language, French, physical fitness, art, music, and more. Other classes in computers, English as a Second Language, U.S. citizenship, business office technology, gardening, home landscaping, wine sensory evaluation, floral design, golf, walking for fitness, soccer, lifeguard training, and floral design also join the Lake Center lineup this spring.
Serving the local business community, new business classes such as Mathematical Applications in Business, offered Monday and Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 6:30 pm, Personal Finance on Thursday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 pm, and Managerial Accounting on Monday and Wednesday from 6:30 p.m. to 9 pm are all included in the Lakeport schedule.
Two voice classes have been added to the spring schedule with instructor Kathryn Allan: Beginning Voice on Wednesday from 3 p.m. to 5 pm and Community Chorus on Wednesday evenings from 6 p.m. to 9 pm.
Several short-term classes, Computer Creations, Beginning Quicken, and Beginning Word for Windows, and a new two-day course, Flashing Back, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, set for just two days on a Friday and Saturday in May, are also scheduled in Lakeport.
A Lake Center learning lab with student assessment computers, distance education study stations with access to all college online classes, college library resources, and a student study area also supports enrolled students. A self-paced math lab with a friendly and supportive learning environment continues in Lakeport this spring.
Students interested in Mendocino College classes in all locations including Ukiah and Willits, and many new online course offerings, should consult the printed college schedule or listings on the college webpage for details.
“Many California residents are not aware that the $20 per unit cost for community college classes is among the lowest in the nation, and that various forms of financial assistance allow for fee reductions for those that qualify," said Lake Center Academic Counselor Shannon McCulley.
More than half the students who attend Mendocino College qualify for some form of financial aid. Many meet the guidelines that eliminate the unit fees and others receive grants to cover college costs. Grants do not need to be repaid.
High school students can also meet some graduation requirements or jump-start their college careers by taking college classes locally and Mendocino College has waived unit fees for currently enrolled high school students.
