Academic Decathlon student winners announced

LAKEPORT – The Lake County Office of Education has released the full results for Saturday's Lake County Academic Decathlon.

  

The overall winning team was Lower Lake High School, who scored 32,875 out of a possible 60,000, followed by Upper Lake High School with 31,423.3.


Lower Lake High's Academic Decathlon team will compete in the California Academic Decathlon State Finals on March 15-18 at the LAX Marriott Hotel in Los Angeles. Participants will include Coach Nancy Harby; varsity level team members Jared Focose, Jamie Walker and Kayla Huff; scholastic level team members Manuel Pantoja, Anthea Tuley and Joe Riggs; and honor level team members Kate Lyons, Emily Riggs and Emmalena Illia.


Each team member will participate in 10 grueling events in the Academic Decathlon, including mathematics, economics, music, art, language and literature, and science. In addition, the contestants will perform prepared and impromptu speeches, write an essay on a given topic and are interviewed by a panel of judges. The final event, the Super Quiz, an academic relay, will be held at UCLA's John Wooden Center before a cheering crowd.

– Music: Bronze, Emily Riggs, LLHS Team 1; Silver, Robin Grayhorse, ULHS Team 1; Gold, Omega Letana, ULHS Team 1.


– Essay: Bronze, Emily Riggs, LLHS Team 1; Silver, Kelsey Reeves, Middletown High School; Gold, Kate Lyons, LLHS Team 1.


– Arts: Bronze, Kate Lyons, LLHS Team 1; tie for Silver, Jared Focose, LLHS Team 1 and Emily Riggs, LLHS Team 1; Gold, Omega Letana, ULHS Team I.


– Interview: Bronze, Josh Salazar, LLHS Team 2; Silver, Kate Lyons, LLHS Team 1; Gold, Robert Pyle, ULHS Team 1.


– Language and Literature: Bronze, Kelsey Reeves, MHS; Silver, Shirley Barajas, LLHS Team 2; tie for Gold, Emily Riggs, LLHS Team 1 and Kimberly Lajcik, Clear Lake High School.


– Mathematics: tie for Bronze, Anna Lopez, MHS and Robin McCutcheon, ULHS Team 1; Silver, Kyle Coleman, ULHS Team 1; Gold, Omega Letana, ULHS Team 1.


– Economics: Bronze, Kate Lyons, LLHS Team 1; Silver, Robert Pyle, ULHS Team 1; Gold, Kelsey Reeves, MHS.


– Social Science: Bronze, Anthea Tuley, LLHS Team 1; Silver, Kate Lyons, LLHS Team 1; Gold, Emily Riggs, LLHS Team 1.


– Speech/Impromptu: tie for Bronze, Quinn Womachka, ULHS Team 2 and Omega Letana, ULHS Team 1; Silver, Robert Pyle, ULHS Team 1; Gold, Emily Riggs, LLHS Team 1.


– Overall Varsity Category: Bronze, Kayla Huff, LLHS Team 1; Silver, Jared Focose, LLHS Team 1; Gold, Robert Pyle, ULHS Team 1.


– Overall Scholastic Category: Bronze, Robin Grayhorse, ULHS Team 1; Silver, Anthea Tuley, LLHS Team 1; Gold, Mark Nelson, CLHS.


– Overall Honor Category: Bronze, Kate Lyons, LLHS Team 1; Silver, Omega Letana, ULHS Team 1; Gold, Emily Riggs, LLHS Team 1.
