The free event will begin at 5:30 a.m. near the a Bloodys Island historical marker, located a half-mile south of Upper Lake on Highway 20 right on Reclamation Road (www.hmdb.org/Marker.asp?Marker=1190).

The great-grandchildren of Bloody Island survivor Lucy “Ni'ka” Moore will lead the ceremony, which will honor the elders, women, children and men who were massacred on Bo-no-po-ti Island

(renamed Bloody Island) on May 15, 1850, by the U.S. Army led by Captain Lyons.

LOWER LAKE – The public is invited to a Living History Day, Saturday, May 23, at the Lower Lake Historic Schoolhouse Museum, 16435 Main St., Lower Lake.

Museum staff, dressed in period costume, will be demonstrating Victorian-era household items and playing the 1906 player piano.

Toys and games from the early 1900s will be available for the children, along with the viewing of 3-D pictures through a stereoscope.

Take a step back in time with museum staff and learn about local history.

Museum hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and admission is free.

CLEARLAKE – The city of Clearlake got some sprucing up on May 9 as community members gathered for a city cleanup effort.

Trash was picked up along the main city roadways through town.

This was the second year for the cleanup.

CLEARLAKE – A car wash scheduled for this Saturday will help a local teen raise funds for a trip to Europe this summer.

Seventeen-year-old Katreena Galindo, currently a junior at Lower Lake High School, has been selected as one of two young women from California to tour Europe this summer as part of an international basketball tour.

The tour will cost $4,500, which includes training camp, 14 days of travel overseas, two meals a day, lodging and uniforms.

The first car wash will be this Saturday, May 16, beginning at 10 a.m. at Foods Etc. on Lakeshore Drive in Clearlake. Customer can pick the amount they chose to give for the car wash as a donation.

Donations also may be mailed to the Katreena Galindo Basketball Fund, in care of Westamerica Bank, 15342 Lakeshore Drive, Clearlake, CA 95422.

A fun selection of short film and animation will be presented to highlight the independent nature of film that Coyote screens each year.

A buffet lunch is available for $5 at the door. Reservations are not required.

The Coyote Film Festival screens one Saturday a month at the Calpine Geothermal Visitors Center in Middletown from March through November. The next screening is on Saturday, May 16, with a 1:30 p.m. matinée and a 7:30 p.m. showing that will be all about pets.

Coyote Film Festival is Lake County’s own independent film festival and is the fundraising arm of EcoArts of Lake County, a South County arts nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing visual art opportunities to residents and visitors of Lake County.
