Thayne G. Buchanan, 90, of Provo, Utah, passed away Oct. 25, 2017.

He was born Nov. 3, 1927, in Joseph, Utah, to Golden R. Buchanan and Thelma (Shaw) Buchanan. He has two brothers Dohn and Richard Buchanan.

He grew up on a farm in central Utah and worked with his brothers to manage the farm. He loved to ride his horse and he always had his trusty 22 with him to hunt.

He was too young to serve during World War II, but as a teenager he was enlisted in the Utah State Reserve. He was trained to fight for his country should there have been an invasion.

Thayne served a mission in Great Lakes Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

On returning from his mission his Dad was introduced to Betty Iris Nielsen by his father and after a brief dating period asked her to be his wife.

Thayne married Betty Iris Nielsen November 1950 in the Salt Lake Temple. They enjoyed 55 wonderful years together. They had five kids, 24 grandkids and 58 great-grandkids.

Family was very important to him. With his family he camped, water skied and traveled.

Thayne served faithfully in many callings throughout the years for the LDS church. Thayne and Betty served as Ordinance Workers in the Oakland LDS Temple for 12 years.

Thayne left a legacy of dedicated service to all that knew and loved him.

Thayne and Betty retired to Lakeport, Calif., where they enjoyed the beauty of the lake and many wonderful family get-togethers. After a courageous battle with cancer, Betty passed in 2005.

Shortly after that Thayne found Marilyn Richards whom he had met as a young man and fell in love and were married. Thayne and Marilyn served three years in the Martin Handcart mission for the LDS Church where the served as guides to the visitors.

Thayne and Marilyn also served in the Jamestown Retirement Home Branch. Two years ago, Thayne moved into Jamestown as a resident.

Thayne is survived by his wife, Marilyn Buchanan; a sister-in-law, Mavis Buchanan; two sons, two daughters and a daughter-in-law, Curtis (Linda) Buchanan, Clair (Linda) Buchanan, Vicki (Cory) Miller, Stephanie (DeLyle) Perry, Barbara Buchanan.

He helped support most of his grandkids on missions and was influential in helping many of his grandsons to receive the rank of Eagle.

Funeral services will be Friday, Nov. 3, at 11 a.m. at the Lakeport LDS Ward, 600 16th St., Lakeport, Calif.

Family and friends may visit that morning from 10 to 10:50 a.m. at the LDS Chapel.

Interment will follow the service at Hartley Cemetery, Lakeport.
