LAKEPORT, Calif. – Clarence Lagares, 90, of Lakeport passed peacefully surrounded by family and friends who loved him on April 20, 2014.

He was born in Berkeley, Calif., on Oct. 21, 1923, to Irene and Clarence Xenakis. His father passed away when he was young; he was lovingly raised by his mother and stepfather Thomas Lagares. Clarence was always proud of his Greek heritage.

He attended school in San Francisco, Calif., and learned to be a businessman from his “father” who owned a restaurant and bar. In his early 20s, Clarence went into partnership with him and they bought a grocery store.

In 1959 he married and had two children, Diana and Steven. In 1971 he moved to Lakeport and purchased the legendary Cottage Coffee Shop and raised his children as a devoted and loving single parent. He retired and sold the business in 1985.

Clarence loved the atmosphere of his restaurant. He loved the interactions he had with his customers and was always there to make sure everyone was satisfied with the food and service. No one left unhappy. His friendly and warm personality drew people to “The Cottage.” They always knew they would have a warm welcome and a great meal.

He gave many local kids their first job; they all have fond memories of Clarence and the Cottage Coffee Shop.

He will be greatly missed by friends and family. He especially liked telling jokes and handing out chocolate kisses to all of the ladies.

He is survived by his son Steven (Litza) Lagares, daughter Diana Boykin, his sister and niece, three grandchildren and his dog Baby.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lakeport from 10 a.m. to noon, with funeral Mass to follow at noon.

A celebration of Clarence's life will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. at Clearlake Bed and Breakfast, 2 16th St. in Lakeport.
