Heaven’s gates were opened on Jan. 11, 2013, for Jose de Jesus Lopez Cueva, know as “Don Chuy” of Kelseyville, Calif.

Born Oct. 15, 1915, in Los Corrales, Jalisco, México to the late Don Luis Lopez and Doña Merenciana Lopez Cueva, Jesus was the first born of seven children, Primitivo (deceased), María Luisa (deceased), Luis, Rafael, Margarita and Felipe.

At 97 years old Jesus is survived by his wife Elvia Lopez and 18 children: Merenciana, Luis, Evilin, Yuriko, Mayi, Jesus, Sonia, Luisa, Abigail, Irma, Andrés, Susana, Jesus, Rafael, Primitivo, Rita, Pedro, and José, numerous loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
 
Jesus settled in Lake County and worked for many ranchers with his family until retirement.

Always a lover of nature and animals, Jesus was the happiest when tending to a garden or livestock.
Jesus excelled in cultivating the earth; his gardens always produced the best vegetables and fruits, which he shared with other families.

He loved horses and the freedom to walk the vast agricultural fields in which he worked.

An avid singer and guitar player, Jesus played in a trio during his early years in México. He had a great love for music and could always be heard whistling tunes to classic Mexican music.

Jesus opened his house to many people in their time of need; he was gracious to any stranger in need.

Everlasting memories of “Don Chuy”: In his pocket, a roll of lifesavers to share with his children. In his hand, a baby bunny that he had caught while working in the pear orchards. This would always thrill his children and the smile on his face from watching them be so delighted.

In our hearts the tune “ my daddy is comir my daddy is comir” we sang to greet our “Apa.” His favorite saying, “No te quiero … Te Adoro!” are some of the best memories.

“Don Chuy” will be missed and lovingly remembered.
 
Jesus fought a courageous battle to overcome a stroke. His family wishes to thank all those that believed in his strength and courage throughout these past seven months .

A public viewing and rosary will be held at Chapel of the Lakes on Tuesday, Jan. 15, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Father Oscar Diaz will celebrate Holly Mass at noon Wednesday, Jan. 16, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Kelseyville. His funeral will take place immediately after mass at the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Lakeport.
