Johnston: Why vote for Susan Krones for district attorney

I have been to debates, read flyers, read information in our local news media and closely followed the campaign for district attorney in Lake County, so I believe I am well informed.

Several issues have stood out, mainly experience and readiness to take the helm on day one.

Steve Brown has eight years experience as a defense attorney in private practice. Susan Krones has 25 years experience as a prosecutor in the Lake County District Attorney’s Office. Plus, she was a defense attorney for seven years in the army.

Steve has never done a jury trial. Susan has done many jury trials including civil and felony cases and, unlike Steve, she has put away murderers, child molesters and violent offenders. She is an avid supporter of Veterans Court which addresses the special circumstances of our veterans and has plans to establish a similar program for the mentally ill. Susan was instrumental in establishing the first child interview center in Lake County for victims of child abuse.

Susan has enormous respect from her coworkers as is evidenced by the endorsement of the Lake County Deputy District Attorneys Association. She has also been endorsed by the Lake County Correctional Officers Association and the North Bay Labor Council.

One last thought. The issue of voting based on gender has come up and on this point I agree with Steve. We should not vote based on gender alone. We should vote based on qualifications and readiness to do the job. It just happens that this time, it's a woman.

Please join me in voting for Susan Krones for district attorney 2018.
