Bloody Island Sunrise Ceremony takes place Saturday

NICE – The 10th annual Bloody Island Sunrise Ceremony will take place this Saturday, May 16.


The free event will begin at 5:30 a.m. near the a Bloodys Island historical marker, located a half-mile south of Upper Lake on Highway 20 right on Reclamation Road (www.hmdb.org/Marker.asp?Marker=1190).


The great-grandchildren of Bloody Island survivor Lucy “Ni'ka” Moore will lead the ceremony, which will honor the elders, women, children and men who were massacred on Bo-no-po-ti Island

(renamed Bloody Island) on May 15, 1850, by the U.S. Army led by Captain Lyons.
