County continues WNV battle

Art Colwell, General Manager of the county's Vector Control Unit, reported that there were only two horses testing positive for the virus. Both had to euthanized. That compares with 10 confirmed equine cases in the year 2005.

The one negative note was that two humans tested positive in the county. There were none in the county in 2005. But neither case was fatal.

Lake County's decline in WNV activity was consistent with the remainder of California.

Statewide, there were 272 reported cases, which is less than a third of the number of cases reported in 2005.

Fatal cases in the state reflected the same precipitous decline with six deaths as opposed to the 29 of the year earlier.
