LAKE COUNTY, Calif. — The Lake County Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Services, or Lake County OES, is seeking public comment on the Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan.
The deadline for offering input on the plan is 5 p.m. Feb. 28.
Previously, Lake County, the city of Lakeport and the city of Clearlake each had separate local hazard mitigation plans.
The plans for Lakeport and Clearlake were last updated in 2018, and they require updating. Lake County updated its LHMP in 2023.
To streamline efforts and better serve the community, local leadership has decided to combine the plans into one multi-jurisdictional plan that will cover all three areas, ensuring that the updating needs for both Lakeport and Clearlake are addressed in one cohesive document.
In coordination with the cities, Lake County OES began the 2024-2025 Lake County Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan project in September 2024.
The Resiliency Initiative consulting firm was retained to support the annex development for the cities of Lakeport and Clearlake and the overall process.
While natural hazards cannot be entirely prevented, mitigation helps reduce the impact of each hazard on the community.
The “base plan” documents the core processes involved with planning, details what is at risk in the unincorporated Lake County and profiles the hazards.
The annexes for each city will mirror the base plan and explain where the process, risks and hazards differ in each jurisdiction. They will offer strategies to reduce the community’s vulnerability to natural disasters such as wildfires, earthquakes and floods.
Community input is essential to developing a plan that accurately reflects the needs and priorities of residents and businesses. As such, residents, business owners and local organizations are encouraged to review the annex and share their feedback.
The annexes are still in process and will be provided for public comment at a later date. By offering separate comment periods for the base plan and annexes, there is ample time for the public to review and provide input on each section.
For the base plan, minor edits may be made, and some data is being finalized before incorporation of public comment and final submission to Cal OES.
Tribes and special districts are invited to annex to the Mult-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan and should contact Lake County OES for more information.
