3.8 quake hits North Coast

Friday's Glen Ellen temblor hit at 3:27 a.m. five miles west north west of Glen Ellen, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. A second quake, registering 2.6 magnitude, occurred in the same location at 6:49 a.m.

Earlier in the week, in the early morning hours of Jan. 7, a 3.1 quake was reported in Glen Ellen.

In Lake County Friday there were four small quakes measuring around the area of Anderson Springs and The Geysers, ranging in magnitude from 1.2 to 2.1.

Numerous small quakes – 37 in all, according to the USGS Web site, ranging from a 1.1 to a 2.5 – have rattled parts of Lake County since Jan. 6.

Much of the area's seismic activity is located around Anderson Springs, Cobb and The Geysers, and attributed to wastewater injection in The Geysers steamfields.

This week, however, also saw small quakes occur near Lake Pillsbury, Lower Lake (the site of the 2.5 quake), Nice and north Lakeport.

In neighboring Glenn County, where seismic activity has appeared less common as compared with Lake, a series of small quakes were noted at locations including Alder Springs and Stony Gorge Reservoir this past week.
