Workshops offer in-depth exploration of death, grief, and loss

LAKEPORT, Calif. – Hospice Services of Lake County is offering a four-part workshop series for professionals and community members seeking to be more knowledgeable and skillful in their relationships with those who are experiencing grief from the death of a loved one.

The series is designed to meet the variety of needs in our community and is recommended for caregivers, counselors, health care providers, human service professionals, volunteers and anyone else interested.

The biweekly sessions on four Saturdays begin Oct. 3, followed by Oct. 17 and 31, and ending Nov. 14.

Each session is set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will take place at the Bereavement Center on the Hospice Services campus, 1862 Parallel Drive.

Due to the current COVID–19 precautions, individuals may also participate in the workshop sessions online using Zoom.

There is a $25 material fee to cover resources, tools and materials included in the training.

Participants will receive a variety of printed materials and a DVD. Complimentary snacks and beverages will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring lunch.

Registration is open through Sept. 25.

Sessions will be facilitated by Bereavement Services Manager Kathleen Bradley. Bradley will lead participants through topics using a bereavement support group model including guided discussions, guest speakers and use of multimedia.

“Interactions involving our collective experiences with death and dying and insights from subject matter experts will enrich the learning environment as we journey through this group process together,” said Bradley.

Supporting individuals who are mourning the loss of a loved can be challenging, especially in Lake County where so many complicated deaths occur.

With the recent pandemic and wildfires, learning how to navigate grief in a positive way is paramount to many individuals, said Bradley. A deeper understanding of grief and enhanced skills will help participants reach out and comfort those that are grieving.
