Lake County Democrats plan new format for Second Saturday Cinema

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – The Lake County Democrats are reformatting their Second Saturday Cinema program on Aug. 8 as a virtual film discussion.

Participants are invited to view “Prescribing Death: The Opioid Crisis in America.”

View at home, when it’s convenient, then join them on Aug. 8 at 2 p.m. for a virtual get-together.

The film follows a case in Oklahoma, where Dr. Regan Nichols is on trial, charged with five murders for over-prescribing opioids.

Her lawyer insists that she was tricked into writing prescriptions by junkies and is being made a scapegoat.

But others believe that doctors like Nichols bear a large responsibility for the crisis now engulfing the country.

Oxycontin, Codeine and Fentanyl – all are prescription drugs to which countless patients have become addicted.

As America battles an opioid crisis that sees 170 citizens die every day, lawyers and prosecutors are trying to bring an end to Big Pharma’s impunity.

The film can be viewed from www.kanopy.com . Establish access using your library card.

Why did they choose this film? Why now? Because it’s back in the news. The city of Lakeport recently joined the California Opioid Consortium in a suit against manufacturers and distributors of opioids for their role in creating this costly epidemic. Lake County has not been immune.

Enjoy camaraderie and discussion from your couch, your patio or wherever you set up your device. Residents must register to participate; use this link.
