LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – Lake County Division 35 of the California Retired Teachers Association, or CalRTA, continues to show its support for local students and current teachers by sponsoring teacher mini-grants.

This school year, Division 35 awarded four mini-grants of $200 each to teachers in Lake County schools.

The only requirement is that the funds be used for the purchase of materials that can be reused in successive years, not for one-time expenses.

Elva Hohn, chair of the grant committee, recently announced the following recipients of the 2019/2020 grants:

– Alison Uuereb, from Konocti Education Center, who purchased a sewing machine and ironing board for her grades 7-12 Advanced Arts Program.

– Anna Renfrow, from Lucerne Elementary School, who purchased a class set of literature books for her fifth-grade class.

– Kristen Hiatt, from Upper Lake Elementary School, who purchased balls to go with the Bal-A-Vis X Program, teaching focus and coordination to the school’s first graders.

– Erica O’Meara, from Upper Lake Elementary, who purchased books and DVDs to go with the Bal-A-Vis Program.

The grant committee consisting of eight retired teachers met to review and evaluate applications for the grants.

“Choosing winners of the awards is always difficult,” Hohn said. “They were all so wonderful and worthy of being funded. We hope these teachers will apply again next year when we are planning to award 5 teachers $200 each.”

Members of the committee visited the recipients' schools to present the award at a faculty meeting.

Division President Joyce Anderson added, “We would like to thank all the teachers who submitted their applications. Growing our membership allows us to increase the number of mini-grants we can fund.”
