Lynn Bettencourt, called Jack by friends and family, was born Nov. 7, 1941, in Providence, Rhode Island, to parents Earl and Bea Bettencourt. He died at the University of California San Francisco Hospital on Oct. 1, 2009, after a long illness.

Jack grew up in Seekonk, Massachusetts, and graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 1964 with a bachelor's degree in English.

A distinguished military student in the Air Force ROTC, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant upon graduation.

He met his wife, Carol Sue Mudd, at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama.

After his military service he completed a master’s degree in safety at Central Missouri University.

Jack became a certified safety professional and the director of safety for Long Beach Naval Shipyard, California, where he retired in 1989.

Jack and Carol moved to Lake County, California, in 2001, to fulfill his lifelong dream of living in a little house on a lake. He became active in the Democratic Party, serving as a Lake County Democratic Party Central Committee member.

Jack is survived by his wife, Carol; daughters, Kristen Levy and son-in-law, David, who live in Colorado and Donna Dean and her husband, Lance, who live in California. His brother Keith Bettencourt lives with his wife Judy in Massachusetts.

Jack was delighted to greet his long-awaited granddaughter, Stephanie Rose, to the world in September of 2008. Stephanie inherited his bright blue eyes.

There was a private memorial at the couple’s Lake County home.

I met Jack at several Democratic social fundraisers- you couldn't miss him- he alway had a smile with look of puzzlement about why something wasn't going the exact way that it should. There was simply the matter of finding the problem, fixing it, and hear no more about it. One afternoon while volunteering in Lucerne at our temporary elections headquarters, he and Carol were supposed to relieve my shift, but Carol was tied up with a Red Cross relief case, so she was late. Well, Jack and I spent the best time talking up issues and discussing personal stories for hours until Carol showed up and I left, even though I could have stayed longer. Jack was very, very bright and well-informed and had a warm personality and a wry sense of humor. You were treated as a friend by Jack as soon as you met him.
