Community

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. — The E Center Women, Infants and Children Program has released its April appointment scheduling notice.

The nationwide, federally sponsored WIC nutrition program provides nutrition education, support and help with breastfeeding, community and healthcare referrals, and supplemental food benefits to eligible pregnant women, new moms, postpartum women, infants, and children under the age of five.

WIC encourages enrollment of migrants and eligible women in the early months of pregnancy. Single fathers, foster parents and guardians of children under age five are also eligible to enroll their children.

The food packages include fruits, vegetables, eggs, cheese, milk, cereal, juice, whole grains, and beans or peanut butter, infant cereal, infant fruits and vegetables, and formula supplementation is available for infants.

WIC has generous income guidelines. For example, a family of four can have a yearly gross income of $55,500 or monthly income of up to $4,625 and still be eligible for the health benefits of the WIC program.

To enroll in the WIC program, schedule appointments, or for more information, call 707-263-5253 or 707-994-1151. WIC’s fax numbers are 707-263-4183 or 707-994-1152.

WIC families have the option to complete appointments in person or virtually, and can also complete nutrition classes online at www.wichealth.org. Bilingual staff and lunch-hour appointments are also available.

LAKEPORT, Calif. — On March 23, 100-plus participants gathered at the Lakeport Senior Center to join in the inaugural Bingo Fun for Literacy event, a Lake County Literacy Coalition fundraiser.

The monies generated will benefit the Adult and Family Literacy Program serving all of Lake County.

Food and drink purchases and donations, silent auction bids, and financial donations from individuals and businesses all contributed to the pot.

The program thanked the Lake County community for its generosity and support.

Early in the evening, Literacy Program Coordinator Georgina Marie Guardado welcomed the bingo participants and explained the need for the literacy program, including the fact that 20% of Lake County residents may not know how to read at a third grade level.

The Lake County Literacy Coalition Board President then introduced Laura Mc Andrews-Sammel, Chamber of Commerce director, who served as the host and bingo caller for the event.

Once the games began, so did the fun and entertainment; winners won gift card after gift card.

The food and drink was plentiful. The tables, decorated with rainbow and green tablecloths, created a lively St. Patrick’s Day atmosphere.

Clear Lake High School's Interact volunteers provided exceptional hands-on support the entire evening.

One particularly memorable moment during the festivities was the live auction of the very last wrinkled hotdog for an amazing $105 bid.

The community's awareness and generosity helps in the Lake County Literacy Coalition's efforts to find the people who aren't lucky enough to be able to read or write as well as they would wish and those who may wish to tutor.

To quote Carrie Scott, Carlsbad City Library’s Literacy Services Coordinator who just retired after 35 years, “Literacy is an essential skill, not just a noble cause.”

LAKEPORT, Calif. — Hospice Services of Lake County and the Redwood Caregivers Resource Center will present a free two-part workshop designed to help individuals caring for a loved one with dementia, Alzheimer’s or other neurocognitive disorder.

The "Power of Caregiving" workshop is slated for Saturdays, April 20 and 27, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at 1862 Parallel Drive.

Lunch and snacks will be provided for participants, and arrangements for respite care may be available with advance notice.

The presenting agencies recognize that caring for a loved one or client with dementia, Alzheimer’s or other neurocognitive disorder can forever change the lives of families and caregivers.

There can be devastating effects on those providing long-term care, from financial pressures and legal quandaries to health problems and emotional turmoil.

The workshop is intended to provide a supportive, educational opportunity to help participants increase peace of mind and understanding of caregiving and to feel less isolated and stressed by providing awareness of resources and widening their support systems.

In this two-part series, individuals who care for persons with dementia and other neurocognitive disorders will be given tools to increase their abilities to understand the challenging dementia-related behaviors.

The tools will also aid the caregivers in efforts to communicate and remain “connected” with the family members and to understand common causes for family members’ resistance to allowing caregivers to provide personal care.

Workshop instructor Alexis Glidewell, LCSW, will help participants explore feelings of denial and guilt and will offer tools for handling frustration that may occur for the full-time caregiver. She will offer suggestions for self-care activities and encourage participants to share their own successful tools for maintaining energy and compassion while providing care for a loved one or special client.

Glidewell, a member of the Geriatric Medicine Clinic in Santa Rosa, is associated with the Redwood Caregivers Resource Center, sharing her expertise in teaching classes and facilitating workshops and support groups.

For more information about the workshop and to register, call 707-263-6222, or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. — The Lake County Symphony Association is hosting its inaugural Team Trivia Challenge fundraiser at 7 p.m. on April 27 at the Soper-Reese Theatre.

Sign up now to be a part of a four-member team competing for the title of 2024 Trivia Challenge Champions.

Quizmaster Mark Lipps from Ripe Choice Farm & Catering will be there to ask the tough questions and keep everyone on track.

The competition is limited to 20 teams and spots are expected to fill up fast. Each four-member team can consist of anyone — from co-workers to first-responder agencies, government offices, corporations/businesses, community-service, fraternal organizations, or groups of family or friends. The possibilities are endless.

Each team will pay $200 to enter the contest; teams may ask sponsors to contribute to the entry fee. Sponsors will be publicly acknowledged.

If being in the audience is more your speed, just sit back and watch the action as it unfolds in suspenseful moments and hilarity. Enjoy some hors d’oeuvres. Have a glass of wine. Watchers will pay $20 to sit close to the stage or $15 to sit further back.

Onlookers will also have a chance to participate by putting their names into a drawing; four random and willing audience members will become the “wild card” team and join the competition for free.

The 2024 Champion Team will be invited back next year to defend their title at no charge.

Set the date to come join the Lake County Symphony Association for an evening of fundraising and entertainment.

Ticket information and additional details will be available on the Soper-Reese website.
