Child's death remains under investigation

Chief Deputy District Attorney Jon Hopkins said he's waiting on a pathology report before he makes any decision in the case.

“Obviously we're very interested in cause of death in a situation like this,” he said.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office has stated that a 911 call on the evening of Nov. 30 from an address on Windsor Way in Lucerne reported that the girl was found unresponsive and not breathing. Within minutes, medical personnel from Station 80, followed by LCSO deputies, had arrived and found the girl “in critical condition with suspicious circumstances surrounding her injuries.”

The child subsequently was flown by REACH air ambulance to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento.

She died just days later, on Dec. 3, from her injuries.

Because of the circumstances surrounding the girl's death, LCSO detectives were put on the case and have been conducting an investigation, according to an LCSO statement.

“We need to know if this was an injury indicative of something that occurred accidentally or if it's maybe an indication of criminal means,” he said. “There has not been a determination made that the death was from some criminal means.”

He added, “We have to sort through all the medical evidence before we can arrive at a conclusion on that.”

Hopkins said he expects the pathology report within two to three weeks.
