Anti-spanking campaign hurts kids PDF Print E-mail
Written by Darrell Watkins
Thursday, 14 June 2007

Darwinist liberals are up to no good, again. Now, they want to ban spanking in the home. This is no joke. Sally Lieber (Democrat assemblywoman from Mountain View) says California families don’t know how to raise kids. She’ll show them. Her new law (introduced in the State Assembly) will outlaw, “spanking, hitting, and slapping a child under 4 years old.” Parents will go to jail if they don‘t obey. Spanking causes pain, she says, “it victimizes children and breeds violence in society.” She sounds sooooo righteous. Who’d want to hurt a 3-year-old?

Sally appears to be an angel of light but Bible readers know her campaign against spanking is diabolical. She’s like mother Eve who listened to a serpent and paid with her life. Secular Sally says don’t spank. Biblical wisdom says spank (Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; The rod of correction will drive it far from him). No doubt, secular Sally scorns biblical writers. They’re mean and cruel, she’d say. Sally is mean and cruel. Children will pay a terrible price if she gets her way. Unfortunately, Sally is popular.

Where does Assemblywoman Sally get her crazy idea? No one knows for sure but the San Jose The Mercury News (Jan. 18, 2007) says she got it from her veterinarian. That’s right. She has a cat named Snoop and her vet said never hit the cat. “And if you never hit a cat,” Sally reasons, “you should never hit a kid.”

The Bible is honorable and Sally is harebrained foolish. The lack of discipline victimizes children and breeds violence in society; not spanking. Family and school chastisement train children up in the way they should go. Like Eve, Sally Lieber, the Democrat assemblywoman from Mountain View, is following the malevolent forces of darkness.

Once again Mr. Watkins feels he must discuss the Bible in relation to something that is totally unrelated.

This issue is dead - it died before it ever went anywhere (he quoted a January 2007 article).

Perhaps the editor needs to put limits on how many letters a letter write may publish in a given period of time - Mr. Watkins' inane verbosity is boring.
Donna Christopher Author | 06-14-2007 11:05:32
Please don't limit any writers letters to the online paper. Anyone finding "Mr.Watkins inane verbosity...boring" should simply not read it. What is it with the crowd of folks around here that clutch censorship so tightly to their bussoms? And no, I didn't beat my kids. But they never had any clue that I wouldn't if it was called for.

Mr. Watkins has as much right to his opinion and concept of a stern God as anyone. This right is prescribed by the First Amendment which is among the primary guiding influences of this publication.

This publication respects his right to his own opinion regardless of whether we share it.

Naturally, alternative views are welcome and encouraged that we may all share our beliefs and compare the frameworks of rationality under which we live our lives.

Darrell may write as much and as often as anyone, if you have a problem with it you may either disregard it, post a witty retort or point out how his world view differs from your own.

All we ask is that you refrain from profanity, don't libel and don't advocate violence.

Thank you,
J

Oh yeah, one more thing - NO proselytizing.
bobmalley IP:12.214.42.xxx | 06-15-2007 02:24:44
Elizabeth,

NO proselytizing. The dictionary tells me that proselytizing is 1."to induce someone to convert to someone's faith" OK I guess I can see what you are saying there. However, 2."To recruit someone to join one's party, institution or cause". Isn't that the expressed reason for writing your thoughts most times to induce someone to your way of thinking? Aren't you sending out a recruitment plea when you post stories like the Soda Bay horse saga and include information on who to contact and ask for donations and volunteers? I know that you are thinking of other subjects but I believe that the use of the word, "proselytizing" is incorrect in this instance. Your thoughts?
elarson - Don't look at me Super Administrator | 06-15-2007 03:42:09
Actually, I didn't post that, my husband did. We don't always agree on these issues, and this is a good example.

You're right, proselytizing's basic definition can be seen in comments, letters, guest commentaries, requests for donations and help, etc. -- not just in the religious usage most of us think about.

Personally, I prefer to let the site regulate itself, which it has. That's why we haven't placed limits on the numbers of letters people write or otherwise tried to hinder the discussion that's taking place on the site.

I think of the site as being a lot like fixing lunch for a bunch of folks, trying to make them comfortable and hoping they enjoy themselves. And that involves letting them share their ideas, although I agree with no violence, libel, etc.

The anti-spanking issue never came to fruition and had zero to do with anything biblical or religious - as it should have.

While we are spouting our freedoms, don't forget the separation of church and state.

It would help to "not read" the writer's letters if the editor would place the NAME of the writer at the top with the subject. Saves time.

The anti-spanking issue is not dead. California has, on the books, a law against spanking in public schools. Test scores have dropped like a rock since the new law passed. California schools are now fifteenth from the bottom and falling. Also Secular Sally's law is still making its way through the assembly, last time I checked. Also, those who put their hands over their eyes and ears, won't be able to see or hear. Darrell Watkins
elarson - Fine with that Super Administrator | 06-15-2007 11:26:06
Separation of church and state applies to government entities, which we're not.

I'll be happy to put letter writers' names on the titles if that will give people a better chance avoid reading what they don't want to read.

A note from the letter writer. After printing a front page article off the AP wire that favored Secular Sally's new law, the Record-Bee and Observer-American are refusing to print this letter against the new law. My appeals went into the very office of Gregg McConnell, himself. How's that for censorship!? Darrell Watkins
George J. Dorner - Mr. Watkins' sick obsession Registered | 06-16-2007 08:42:49
Mr. Watkins' sick obsession with beating children until school scores improve is well known in this county. The concept of non-corporal discipline is beyond him. So is logic, respect for others' beliefs, or love for children.
I predict this comment will draw some inane misapplication of scripture from Mr. Watkins.
And, Elizabeth--Mr. Watkins' original letter above DOES advocate violence.
Kruk Ed Strait - Violence? What violence? IP:12.214.40.xxx | 06-17-2007 12:58:20
George Dorner's foolish comment suggesting "violence" is somehow evil shows his simple mindedness. Wise men send delinqent children to the wood shed before they grow up delinquent. Gorge says let unruly kids grow up unruly, then send out a swat team to shoot them down or arrest them and send them off to state prison where they're raped and stabbed. Watkins agrees with the wisemen, "Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; the rod of correction will drive it far from him. Darrell Watkins
George J. Dorner - The rod of correction Registered | 06-17-2007 15:15:25
Mr. Watkins, a "rod of correction" is a stick. Last time I checked, beating a child with a stick was violence. Your insistence upon it, as well as your ignoring my reference to non-corporal punishment, only shows your predictable obsession.
Having been raised as a Christian, I cannot picture Jesus beating children with a stick.
Incoherent religiosity and obsessiveness are signs of mental illness, Mr. Watkins. You really ought to consult a mental health professional for a checkup. I make this statement not out of meanness, but out of hope that a fellow human might receive needed help for an illness.
Kruk Ed Strait - non corporal punishment.. IP:12.214.40.xxx | 06-19-2007 11:25:35
George Dorner says Jesus doesn't agree with wisemen. Jesus would never spank a child, George says. This a strange belief for a Christian. Most Christians know Jesus read and followed all of the wisemen of the Bible. He quoted them often. "Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; the rod of correction will drive it far from him." would be some of the wisdom Jesus followed. These are not Darrell's words. If George believes Darrell is mentally ill, he believes wisemen are mentally ill. He believes Jesus is mentally ill. Jesus might not say George is mentally ill but he would say he's foolish and following doctrines of demons.
George J. Dorner - Quote needed Registered | 06-19-2007 00:40:02
Mr. Watkins, can you cite me the biblical verse describing Jesus beating a child with a stick?
George J. Dorner - Quote needed Registered | 06-19-2007 00:40:41
That would have to be a New Testament citation, of course.
Kruk Ed Strait - New Testament, Old? Author | 06-19-2007 15:19:14
Again, George Dorner is showing simple mindedness. He thinks Jesus doesn't believe in "Old Testament" Bible verses. He thinks there is some difference between Old Testament wisdom and Jesus' wisdom. He suggests Jesus would quote wisemen of the Bible and not follow the teachings, Himself. Can George name one wiseman of the Old Testament Jesus didn't follow? Can George name one place where Jesus said don't spank unruly kids?

Looks like I asked a question you couldn't answer, so you changed the subject.
If there were a poster boy for illogic, you would be it.
I'm not the one making assertions with no proof, nor am I the one inventing my opponent's assertions out of whole cloth (commonly known as lying.)
If you, Mr. Watkins, are the living proof of the result of beating kids until they improve academically, then you make my case more eloquently than I.
