Annan Jensen: Please, leave Brooks out of it PDF Print E-mail

“Brooks Brothers brigade” is cute alliteration, an upgrade on the 2000 “Brooks Brothers riot” somebody used to describe the snarling, screaming Republican out-of-town operatives who shut down the controversial presidential election count in Miami-Dade.

It was clear in the 2000 case that the characterization was intended to emphasize the out-of-town aspect, because Miami is not Brooks Brothers country. It's more Banana Republic and Victoria's Secret, and always has been, even though we had our button-down Brooksie pockets in the buttoned-down '50s. So those rude folks had to come from elsewhere.

Brooksies were calm folks with Ivy League aspirations who wouldn't dream of causing a scene. Probably they still are. Not fashion-forward, you understand, but always tasteful. (OK, call me petty, but I take offense on behalf of the pale pink button-down Oxford cloth shirt.)

Apologies to White House press secretary Robert Gibbs, who seems like a decent guy, but the new Brooks Brothers brigade appellation is just plain wrong.

Today's disruptors of town hall meetings on health care are not strangers. They're our neighbors (or maybe pod people replacing our neighbors?) who come to those meetings to parrot the instructions they've gotten from the public relations consultants for interests which will not benefit from health care reform. Interests like insurance companies which now routinely deny health care to their customers and pharmaceutical companies which won't continue to profit quite so much from widespread preventive care or regulated costs of their pills.

Conservatives for Patients' Rights is a major player in organizing the anti-reform brigades. They work with the conservative PR firm previously known as Creative Response Concepts, the firm "that masterminded the 'Swift boat' attacks against 2004 Democratic presidential candidate John F. Kerry," the Washington Post reported.

Along with other groups friendly to “tea parties” they are advising their sympathizers on how to manufacture apparent grassroots objections (or Astroturf) to health care reform. One memo suggests that tea partiers should "pack the hall ... spread out" to make their numbers seem more significant, and to "rock-the-boat early in the Rep's presentation … to yell out and challenge the Rep's statements early.... to rattle him, get him off his prepared script and agenda ... stand up and shout and sit right back down."

So much for civil discourse or informed dissent.

“Brown shirt brigades” seems more appropriate for these folks, in recognition of their similarity to the 1920s and 1930s pro-Hitler storm troopers who specialized in intimidation and starting fights.

That has pretty nice alliteration also, and doesn't insult a stalwart of American fashion. (Or the beloved shirt.)

What Is The Anti-"Socialized Medicine" Movement Doing In Canada, Britain, France,...?
written by futhark, August 07, 2009
The answer is nothing. No politician in one of those countries would stand a chance of reelection if he tried to abolish the government-run medical insurance program and replace it with a chaotic and exploitive mish-mash like the one burdening our people.

If you don't like the proposals for single-payer or government option, I'd like to hear some positive suggestions for alternatives. If no better alternative is agreed upon we will be stuck with the current on-going disaster that kills thousands of Americans and bankrupts tens of thousands more every year. Shouting out slogans and irrational nonsense at public meetings does nothing to advance us toward a solution to this problem.

True Facts About Medicare
Anyone that has ever used Medicare has died or will die.

The Untruths Abound
written by solincobb, August 07, 2009
The powers that be, don't want our precious capitalist healthcare system changed. We spend more than anyone else in the world and get less, what’s new about that? I would rather have a bureaucrat in front of my healthcare than some corporate monkey whose sole purpose in life is to reject claims. Again, we can not come together for fear of the other guy getting the credit, it will be our downfall.

Just because a country elects a smart president doesn't make it a smart country. And before I go about demonstrating how, let me just say that ignorance has life and death consequences.

Take the health care debate we're presently having: members of Congress have recessed now so they can go home and "listen to their constituents."

An urge they should resist because the vocal constituents don't appear to know anything.

At a recent town-hall meeting in South Carolina, a man stood up and told his Congressman to "keep your government hands off my Medicare," which is kind of like which is kind of like driving cross country to protest highways.

The only orginized leadership is OBAMA CALLING OUT SEIU MEMBERS to go to town hall meetings and physically assault Americans.

Who cares if anything is organized or not. The issue is the right to peacably assemble guarenteed to every American.

Are you people not Americans all the time, or are you just Americans when its your team doing the protesting?
You're fulla beans bearer - no

one has a beef against rights to PEACEABLY ASSEMBLE. Those shouting matches, shoving matches, punches being thrown and hanging in effigy are not peaceable - unless you're a member of the Brown Shirt Brigade. Those of us attending town halls would like to see an mature discussion of the issues. Questions asked and answered and not a bunch of shouting from folks collecting Medicare and VA bennies saying thumbs down to Socialized Medicine - and don't you dare mess with my Medicare. At least read the darn link I provided above. And if the SEIU is finally playing catch up - good for them.
Oh IC Donna

Its ok for the Left to throw feces at Viet nam vets coming home because thats peacable. And it is Ok for Black panthers to "assemble" leagally at vtoing places and harass people.

See Donna Freedom of Speech does not have a volume level. Not in the constitution anywhere.

And if these lying scum representitives and senators would actually answer a question instead of evading it people would not need to repeat the question.

Good to hear you condone SEIU members calling blacks N****** at these town hall meetings, an then beating them sending them to the hospital for 2 days. Because that is what your buddies on the left are doing. But it is ok with you cause Bama sent them to shut people up, right.

You can add me to the tattle tale sheet at Nazi Obama hdq.

Kenneth Gladney, a 38-year-old conservative activist from St. Louis, said he was attacked by some of those arrested as he handed out yellow flags with “smilies/grin.gifon't tread on me” printed on them. He spoke to the Post-Dispatch from the emergency room of the St. John's Mercy Medical Center, where he said he was waiting to be treated for injuries to his knee, back, elbow, shoulder and face that he suffered in the attack. Gladney, who is black, said one of his attackers, also a black man, used a racial slur against him before the attack started.

“It just seems there's no freedom of speech without being attacked,” he said.

SEIU members arrested in ST Loius

Two men were arrested for misdemeanor assault for allegedly punching, pushing and holding a man who was handing out American flags and fliers outside the school.

-- One woman was arrested for misdemeanor assault and destruction of property for allegedly pushing another woman who was recording the events on her cell phone, then grabbing the phone and breaking it.

-- One woman was arrested for interference and resisting arrest. One officer used pepper spray on the woman, police said, when she did not comply with officers' demands. That woman "just would not leave," when asked by officers to back away from the scuffles, said spokesman Rick Eckhard said. She also passively resisted when an officer tried to handcuff her, he said.

-- One man was arrested for peace disturbance when he entered a circle of people who had gathered near the pepper-sprayed woman and refused to comply with officers' demands to leave.

Hope your getting counseling. Obviously you didn't read the link I provided. And your links are???? It's not that I don't believe you, I'm just very untrusting of anonyMOUSE postings. Oh, quoting or referencing Faux News or Rushbo does not count.
Sorry I forgot something bearer

no need for anyone to snitch anyone out to Obama - thanks to Bush's decimation of the 4th Amendment he still has a direct line - he's watching you bearer.

No, freedom of speech does not have volumn level. Productive Town Hall meetings do however.
Productive is when

The politicians actually answer a question.

I see you are blinded by bushsickness, and cling to a failed policy of tying everyone who disgarees with you to FOX and rush. Dont you ever get tired of huffpo and moveon?

The violence at these town halls started when the Obamabot koolaid brigade showed up with their billyclubs.

And, you are starting personal attacks which leads to the conclusion that you actually are living in the same America, and you do believe in freedom of speech. Thank you for agreeing,
Bearer- pretty hard to answer a question

over the cacophany of JUST SAY NO. Don't act like you haven't seen the video. You know damn well Bush/Cheney/Yoo/Gonsoles/Ashcroft et al did decimate the 4th. I don't do huffpo or moveon. Care to disassociate from Faux and Rushbo?

Total falsehood the 'obamabot koolaid' comment - heck, I've been wondering when those who recognize the need for healthcare reform (and civil town hall meetings) to finally get a spine and tell the JUST SAY NO's to SHUT UP AND SIT DOWN as the JSN crowd had been running roughshod for a couple of weeks now.

Still waiting for the citations I requested. I showed you mine, your turn to show me yours. Just gotta ask as I don't quite get your last sentence - your not one of those 'i want my country back' crybabies are you?
Stopmedicare is your citation?

As to you "Just say no " comment
written by bearer, August 07, 2009
If you were honest you would admit that EVERY amendment and IDEA the right submits winds up being voted down strictly along party lines.

EVERY amendment submitted to the health plan has been voted down "say it with me now" along strict party lines.

And who has the majority to vote things DOWN on strict party lines?
Voting along party lines -
written by Donna Christopher, August 08, 2009
well elections do have consequences don't they bearer. I think congress & the prez have bent over backwards to be bi-partisan, all sides have been asked to the table and I've heard from the mouths of several R's that what they have offered as been added to sections of the bill. Your first 'citation' is just your opinion. Your first link isn't and the second one showed nothing discernable except people yelling - SOP for these town halls. I like bi-partisanship - but this JSN crap isn't it and I hope they majority party (of which I am not member) shoves it down the minority's throat if they don't want to do anything more than disrupt. Cute poster, get free for being a dittohead?
thank you for agreeing
written by bearer, August 08, 2009
The party of NO is the democrats in power who will always say NO to any IDEAS.

Bipartisan is when 2 paries discuss something and both sides put input in, not when one side is the only side.

Biparisanship in more that a word, it is an action. Democrats are the Party of NO.

No Amendments.

No Discussion.

No way do they listen to voters.

The democrats are the party of NO.

was actually used in these bills which are ALL still in committee. The above poster you've posted shows you are not about solutions bearer - you are about NO! The Wasilla Hillbilly is your go to answer place?? So, what are you getting ready to quit midway thru? I am done with you, you are a waste of time, space and air (although I concede you've provided ample habitat for said air betwix your ears). You should have checked out the citation I provided for you - there is something actually there unlike what you provided. Like the complete dissassemble of Sarahs hysterical Death Panels. Is she scoring something from her baby's baby's daddy's mom? It would explain alot.

They allowed nothing to pass into the final version of any of the trillions in spending in the last 6 months.

And again, rather that discussing you revert back to standard KOS talking points now including attacking a woman that has nothing to do with what is going on in Washington.

Maybe someone can attack your role as a mother the same way you attack her. Women do not seem to have rights according to your belief system.

So far you have played the Bush mantra, the RACE CARD, the fox news card, and ended up attacking a woman.

Wow just Wow. and you end it all with personal attacks.
Donna watch this for more then 5 minutes and wake up to the reality.
