Why are criminals and failures getting Lake County’s most prestigious awards? Last October, Janine Smith-Citron (Lake Family Resource Center’s Programs Coordinator) generously honored sheriff's Deputy Derik Navarro with the esteemed “Law Enforcement Officer of Distinction” award. He demonstrated “professionalism and compassion” with victims of domestic violence, she gushed. Recently, he was arrested and charged with 18 felony counts related to sex acts with minors. Just how much research goes into these grand decorations, anyway?!

Melissa Fulton (Executive Director of the Lakeport Chamber of Commerce) recently flattered applause and compliments on Louise Nan, district superintendent of Konocti Unified School District. She’s “Woman of the Year,” burbled award judges praising her for, “years working in the Konocti Unified School District.” Her smiling face glowed under the STARS SHINE headlines on the front pages of the local newspapers. Unfortunately, her students at KUSD don’t shine when they take state tests. Louise, no doubt, is a friendly lady but she can’t teach kids to read, write and do arithmetic.

The same honor judges gave Bill Cornelison a “Lifetime Achievement” prize at the “Stars of Lake County” celebration. Bill was superintendent of Lake County Office of Education for many years. How do common, ordinary and unsuccessful, government employees get such high awards? They dress nice and smile a lot but, then, so does Barney.

It’s as plain as the nose on your face, Fulton and Smith-Citron need remedial classes in award giving. Sheriff's deputies charged with crimes should receive gleaming “Fleecing Taxpayer” medals instead of being “Officers of Distinction.” Superintendents of failing schools should be “Bogus Bumbling Professors” instead of “Women of the Year.” Newspaper editors who don’t pay attention to who‘s getting awards and for what, should get a great big “Empty Suit“ trophy. “The worse I get the more popular I am,“ is supposed to be droll humor.

Well, I guess hell has frozen over. I agree with Mr. Watkins completely. I think what we have here is the culture of everyone gets a trophy because they participated. Kinda like a 'heres your trophy cause you got your butt out of bed today and went to work'. I see a strong sense of entitlement in many of our youth today - one they haven't earned. "Empty Suit" trophy for the civilian ciphers and maybe gold handcuffs for the law enforcement versions - what is it with all these cops getting busted? Is it sudden abhorrent behavior or stuff thats been ignored till a new DA? All the honorees you've mention Mr. Watkins are on the public payroll - perhaps "therein lies the rub".

Corneilson and Navarro are the twits darrel says they are, Nan is a maybe, and that district has the most tweaker babies so they really do have a hard row to sow over there. There had to be some point in time when Darrel got it right, so I guess now there will be another long dry spell before the self-appointed left hand of God makes any sense again. Keep writing darrel, we really do need a bit more amusement in our lives these days.

Just a note from the letter writer. It should be known that this letter has been submitted to the Record-Bee several times (even personally to Mr. Gregg McConnell) He's refusing to print it. Does Gregg and Lake County Publishing have too much invested in giving out some of these bogus awards?

Well Mr. Watkins, while I don't agree with most of what you have to say, I would defend to the death your right to say it. Of course the organization refusing to print your letter has to much invested in the "I Love Me" awards. The only good thing about them is of late there have actually been some deserving recipients. If you are the same DW that recently had a new addition to the family, congrats!
