UKIAH – Deven Castañón and Bear Palomo have been named co-champions of the 2008-09 Mendocino College Math Contest.

Both students successfully solved 24 out of the 29 weekly puzzles.

Runners-up were Earl L. Powell, Jr. with 15, Luke Gardner with 12, Xiao Hui Lau with 10 and Gwo Fang with 8.

A total of 38 students submitted successful solutions to at least one of the puzzles.

Castañón is a 2008 graduate of Ukiah High School. He lives in Redwood Valley, is undecided about his major, but would like to study abroad.

He does not consider himself mathematically inclined. He added, “I just like puzzles. It’s a fun way to test your brain.”

Palomo comes from Sonora and calls himself an explorer, a traveler, a firefighter and an actor. He volunteers with the Ukiah Fire Department. His goal is to purchase a yacht and sail the Pacific, taking on passengers to pay the bills.

About his puzzle-solving skills, he said, “I’ve got a penchant for logic problems of any sort, and to me math is simply a form of logic.”

The contests, which are open to all Mendocino College students, include numerical, geometrical, logical and miscellaneous puzzles.

A numerical one from the fall semester asked: If you had $200 to buy 100 animals, with chickens costing $1 each, turkeys $6 each and calves $20 each, how many of each would you buy?
