UPPER LAKE – Following a search that lasted several hours on Tuesday, law enforcement and fire personnel were able to find an injured Upper Lake man.

Austin Duncan, 18, was located around mid-afternoon after falling and injuring his back.

Sheriff's officials reported that they attempted to contact Duncan at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday at a location along Highway 20. Duncan, however, fled, running across the highway in the area of Reclamation Road.

Officials did not comment on the purpose of the initial contact with Duncan. However, an unidentified family member suggested that the family was concerned about Duncan's behavior after a family member's recent death.

Duncan managed to evade deputies for several hours before calling 911 around 11:30 a.m., according to a report at the scene. He explained to the 911 dispatcher that he had fallen and had injured his back and requested medical assistance.

As Duncan attempted to describe his surroundings to the California Highway Patrol dispatchers in Ukiah, the dispatchers communicated via radio to CHP Officers Craig Van Housen and Brian Engle, who were aiding the sheriff's office in the search, along with Northshore Fire.

A CHP helicopter from Napa joined the search at 1 p.m.

Communication with Duncan was lost several times. Officials suggested that perhaps Duncan was seeking medical help but did not want contact with law enforcement.

The search covered several acres on both sides of Reclamation Road, with terrain varying from flat open fields to deep and wide gullies lined by 10- to 12-foot-tall dense, wild berry bushes with long sharp thorns.

At around 2 p.m., Duncan made contact with 911 again. With the help of the dispatcher, Duncan described what he could see and hear, and his location was narrowed to an area just 50 feet from the side of the road.

Found in the heavy wild berry bushes Duncan was unable to move without assistance. Duncan’s mother, Helena Duncan, assisted officials in the search and was the first to make visual contact.

The terrain where he was located was nearly inaccesible from the road. The CHP helicopter was sent airborne again with a CHP flight paramedic and Sheriff's Sgt. Gary Basor on board.

Duncan was carefully extricated from the thorny grasp of the berry bushes and loaded aboard a Northshore Fire ambulance from the Upper Lake station. Medical personnel transported him to Sutter Lakeside Hospital.

No information about Duncan's condition was available late Tuesday.

the indians don't pay for anything. The taxpaying citizens foot the bill for their dysfunctional behaviour and sovereignty issues.

Quit the Ethnic Profiling Plea
written by Fran, December 03, 2008
This is so tiresome, Elmerf.
From your comments one would think dysfunctional behavior is unique to Native Americans. When a white person is in the news for some social or legal infraction, do we say, "Oh those dysfunctional, drunk, etc. etc. white people!?"
So get off it right now. Believe me, whatever challenges afflict the Native community, the dominant culture has got them, too. Look around you.
If anybody is so naive to think that substandard housing and junk-filled yards occur only on the rez, please take a little tour through the city of Clearlake. Start up in Clearlake Park on the numbered streets off Arrowhead. Just about any neighborhood of Clearlake is equally educational. If you're on foot, be sure to bring some pepper spray for the pit bulls.
I don't mean to put down Clearlake, as I know there are many residents trying to clean up their neighborhoods and make them safer and more esthetic. What I'm doing is pointing out that blight doesn't have a color code, it's just blight! Same for dysfunctionl behavior. So quit stereotyping people and grow up!

I said. Nobody was playing the race card but you namby pambys. What I stated was true. Solving the Indian issue is not done by throwing more money at it. Most of them are where they are today because of low IQ; inbreeding and lack of education. A large majority of them are convicted felons. Fact.
Hey elmerf

I have to assume you know Mr. Duncan personally. I have read the article several times after reading the comments and do not read anywhere that his ethnicity is of Native American decent. Sounds like you have a personal issue with Native Americans. BTW, what is a mamby pamby? Can you please educate me. On second thought, based on your posts above, I don't believe you have the ability to educate anyone with accurate information.

Just so you all know Robinson is not a reservation, it is a rancheria, and they are not sovereign. With my experiences with the Indians, a lot of them hate whites as much as elmerf hates them. so the racism goes both ways.

500 Nations documentary
written by jpshute, December 04, 2008
I got this documentary through Netflix, if any of you have any integrity at all I recommend you view it. It was an eye opener for me. We weren't taught this stuff in the schools I attended.

Product Description
500 Nations is an eight-part that explores the history of the indigenous peoples of North and Central America, from pre-Colombian times through the period of European contact and colonization, to the end of the 19th century and the subjugation of the Plains Indians of North America.
