LUCERNE – A private effort to feed the hungry and give youngsters a gathering place in Lucerne is foundering for lack of funds.

"I may have to do a photo layout for Hustler magazine to keep it going," joked 40-something Yvonne Cox, who runs a teen center and free weekly dinner with a lot of help from her friends, but none from any agencies or organizations.

Cox, better known as Snake Lady, a belly dancer and tattoo artist, has been offering weekly free meals for about two years, first at the Lucerne Alpine Senior Center, and currently at Kapitan's Kafé, a donated space. Except for occasional donations, she foots the bills for groceries. Dinner is sometimes a full meal with entrée and dessert, and sometimes a hearty soup.

Her youth center is in a building donated by Dr. Bob Gardner, who has told her he needs some rent money soon.

Gardner owns several Lucerne properties and said he's recently had some interest from potential tenants.

Gardner said this last week, "If there's any help on the horizon I would like to work with her, and I hope the community will pull together. She operates from the heart and doesn't just talk about things that actually does them. I'd love to see her get some help, but I can't carry it much longer. Our original agreement was she had the space free for three months, which ended last April."

Not everyone is a Snake Lady fan. Some criticize her friendship with Eddy Lepp, the Upper Lake marijuana grower who has just been convicted on federal drug charges. Some disapprove of her clothes, often bare midriff, or her stable of motorcycles, or sales of pipes and other marijuana paraphernalia at her former imports and gift shop.

Cox said she met with a representative of the sheriff's office in June of 2007 when Lucerne residents were worried about a rash of graffiti on buildings, hoping for some help from that department in organizing youth activities.

The sheriff's department does have youth activities, but none specifically targeted to Lucerne, according to public information officer Capt. James Bauman.

Those are the Explorer program sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America and the Sheriff's Activity League's Junior Giants program, an offshoot of the San Francisco Giants, Bauman said.

Cox's youth program includes after-school activities, Saturday movies (G or PG-rated) and occasional dances, all at the corner of 15th Avenue and Highway 20, across the street from Gardner's medical clinic.

The free dinners – which she said have provided 13,000 meals in the two years since they started – were first held at the Lucerne Alpine Senior Center, where Cox raised $500 for the center with a poker run motorcycle event, and missed becoming a board member by one vote. She and sources close to the center, who asked not to be identified, agreed there were a variety of reasons she moved from there last fall. There were disagreements over food borrowed by the center's kitchen staff, and over how to deal with unwelcome observers of her weekly belly dance classes.

She first moved the dinners to Harbor Park; the timing was unfortunate, just before the winter rainy season started. She requested and got use of Kapitan's Kafé restaurant, 6150 E. Highway 20, from owners Jose Plata and his wife Ramona Gomez. They close at 3 p.m., and Cox and her helpers move in soon after for the 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday dinners.

Regular volunteer workers at the dinners are James MacDonald (Mac) and Lillian Sherry, both formerly associated with the senior center, he as head cook and she as a board member.

Another key volunteer is Christina Anderson, who works in Robinson Rancheria tribal administration and whose 11-year-old son is a regular at the youth center. In her spare time she is working on getting nonprofit status for the youth center, and then seeking grants to keep it operating. She said she expects the nonprofit application to be approved in January.

Meanwhile, insurance is under the nonprofit umbrella of Sunrise Services. Anderson can be reached at the tribal office, 275-0527.

Sorry Hun (Ms. Cox; a.k.a: Snake Lady) More respectfully Yvonne; you don't fit the mold; so there will be no money coming for your mission, your ministry; your calling in life. You and the kids you are wanting too help are too far out of the box for main stream America to want to help you.

Main stream America can't see beyond the tattoos to see your heart! Those kids; you are wanting too help; are seen as those kids who are not worth helping! Worthy is an interesting word; isn't it? Your motives must be something other than just wanting to see these kids survive! Even Dr. Gardner has had to fight this battle; because the people he serves are seen as the scourge of the earth by main stream America.

I will be getting in touch with Ms. Anderson soon and see of what assistance I can be to provide some relief for your mission, your ministry; your calling in life. Hopefully this article will inspire some to contribute to this cause; even if it is just a dollar a week or a dollar a month; how about just a dollar a year Folks; come on open your hearts; even these kids might be worth saving!

you 'carry'ing Dr Bob? The building was vacant, as so many here are (and owned by you), before Yvonne started her youth center. So what's the deal, are your empty buildings a matched set and need to remain vacant? Whazzup Doc?
Amazing

The question people really need to be asking themselves if they are going to ignore the message just because they don't like the looks of the messenger. Do we just allow people to suffer, just because the person who is trying to help them doesn't fit the criteria of a "model citizen" and we don't like the "looks" of them or the company they keep? We shouldn't have to be held to the standards of Mother Theresa in order to be allowed to do our part to ease suffering.

I first met Yvonne about two years ago. I am certain that some of her friendships and associations, as well as her perceived lifestyle turn a lot of people off. BUT, I have been judging people for many years as part of my career. This woman is one hundred percent sincere in her desire to feed the hungry and to help the youth of the Northshore. It is a crying shame that she cannot get any ehlp form local agencies. You go girl, yell louder and hopefully someone will step forward.
just a thought

I would also like to make a suggestion. One of the things that might be beneficial for both the kids and the hungry would be to start a community garden. Maybe, someone could donate the use of a plot of land? Both groups could work on it and it would give them both fresh food, a little exercise, and a deeper understanding and respect for the land. You could also have the teens help out in preparing the food (it is always good to have experience in food preparation) for a letter of recommendation. Plus. it would save a bit on the cost of food and supplement for the lack in any donations, as seeds and plants are far cheaper than store bought food (particularly if you teach them to save seeds). Just a thought. I know, not everyone will be into this idea but I have seen models of it elsewhere to feed the hungry and it has worked wonders. Here are some examples...

A community garden would be great but it would be vandalized by the same kids it is intended to help. Maybe some of these local parents of these starving children should get off their lazy butts and do something for themselves and their kids instead of sitting around with other loser parents getting drunk at 10 A.M. I understand going through rough times, but a majority of the low lifes here in this county are not going throgh a rough patch. They are choosing to be dirtbags, and have been for years. I know the kids don't have a choice but the parents sure do...We need to quit giving the dead beats hand outs if they are not going to help themselves. And another thing...Since when has being poor mean you can't be clean. There are so many Nasty smelling and Dirty people in Lucerne. There is no excuse to be so nasty. Take the 3 dollars you spend on your beer and by some soap. Take some pride in yourselves. It has nothing to do with the current economy either, they were that way during better times.
Just gotta love Dr. Bob\'s

business accumen - he had many of his building leased out but then decided to double the sq ft rate overnight and lost many tenants in one fell swoop. Now he sez he has 'potential tenants'. So the bird (tenants)in hand was not sufficient and you went for the 'two in a bush' business model. You reap what you sow. Your right on track purplegirl with a community garden, it is one of the considerations regarding the Creekside park property. It will need fencing to keep the wildlife at bay, and vandals also but I fully imagine having the new Sheriff Substation a block away from the park may dampen the delinquents in the hood considerably. Magnum, as always, thanks for the productive input.

and I will get a free copy to whoever needs it. Also, I am more than willing to donate some seeds and share my knowledge of gardening if need be.
Snakey\'s Own Words

Snakey and I decided to make a video response to answer the question, why does she do the soup kitchen? You can view it on google.com by following this link: http://video.google.com/videop...0783163057

Meanwhile, let's get together and solve our problems, not create more!
