Officials pleased with courthouse safety measures PDF Print E-mail

LAKE COUNTY – If you've visited either courthouse in Lake County recently, you likely passed through a security screening system meant to ensure the safety of the buildings and their inhabitants.

Since Judge Arthur Mann signed an order requiring airport-type security screening as of May 28, screening visitors has been a part of the daily routine at the Lake County Courthouse in Lakeport. Screening was enacted at the south county courthouse in Clearlake in the summer of 2007.

Assistant Court Executive Officer Kip Rodda said court officials are pleased with the additional security that the screening brings to the facility and the cooperation of other courthouse users.

Courthouse visitors also are learning what they can and can't have when entering the courthouse, Rodda noted.

The September report on court security operations, which Rodda provided to Lake County News, shows that so far this year there have been 112,069 persons screened between the two courthouses, 74,510 at Lakeport since May and 37,559 for Clearlake since the start of the year.

Approximately 20,880 people were screened at both courthouses in September alone, the report notes.

Weapons such as guns are a primary target for screeners, but only five guns have been found so far this year, and none were confiscated. One was noted in the September report for the Lakeport courthouse. There also have been seven bullets, one of which was taken, this year.

More prevalent have been items such as pepper spray or mace, with 26 found and three confiscated this year so far.

The most common items found that violates court security rules are knives. The report notes that 1,612 have been discovered this year, 180 of them at Lakeport in September. Year-to-date, only 90 have been confiscated; in many cases visitors may keep the items if they agree to remove them from the courthouse.

Other items that will set off the security alarms are chains over a foot in length (171 of those have been found so far this year and seven confiscated), multi-tools (170 found, 10 confiscated), razor blades (71 found, 19 confiscated) and more mundane items including scissors, laser pointers, glass containers, knitting needles, nail files and safety pins.

In an interesting bit of trivia, 84 handcuff keys have been found year-to-date and 11 of them confiscated. There have not, however, been any handcuffs found or confiscated at either courthouse.

blah blah blah..another stupid comment. Did you not read the part about they have to give up the item or remove it from the courthouse? At least they are trying to make it safer. I am sure you have a better idea Donna on how to do that. So get to it.

your benefit Magnum - what do they do with the stuff they confiscated - especially the Fourth Amendment? My better idea - have government actually serve the people instead of pissing them off so badly that have a need to be afraid. Why do I have the feeling that you slop at the public trough?

How are they not serving the people? They are making it safer for THE PEOPLE by implementing these safety features. If people are not smart enough to leave their stuff in their car or not be lazy and take it back to their car then they deserve to lose it.

what * do * they * do * with * the * stuff * they * confiscate? It's ok to say you don't know if you don't know. If you think tearing up the 4th amendment and subject people to unwarranted searches and seizures is serving the public I just gotta ask - do you have an 8x10 pic of Putin you stare adoringly at???

There are two standards one for them the government and one for us the citizen. They allow themselfs guns for the bad guys, they take my away. For me to pack I have to brake the law.If I fell threaten and show the weapon I could be charged with brandishing. Their work place is secured is yours? I do admit a bias for some in that building because they lie and cover up the lies. No I will not goose step with the rest of you. Donna the only freedom we have is to complain without being put to the wall all the rest are Hopkins determination and we have seen his judgement. So we will fear, fear. Good luck.

Geez.. I don't know what they do with the stuff they take, but I'm sure if you asked THEM they might tell you. I can't believe your complaining(actually I can) about them putting security measures in place BEFORE something bad happens there. With the increase in violent crimes in this area at least they are taking a proactive approach. People don't have to bring this stuff to the courthouse, there is no need for it in there. They have a choice, leave it at home or in their car or lose it...are you saying just let anybody and everybody carry a weapon into the courthouse? There is a place and time for this type of security, and this is it. The security is to protect the innocent, and even the guilty people of this county. The county government is not going into your house and taking your weapons, well not yet anyway. Have you not seen the news footage of incidents at other courthouses? Why not avoid the horrible violence with a little incovenience.
To paraphrase, those

who give up liberty for security deserve (and end up getting) neither. You cower all ya want magnum, I'll pass. Auto accidents happen - let's take away all personal vehicles before someone has an accident. Well heck, lots of gun violence, best way to stem that is to take away everyone's guns. I'll pass on that one too. Hey W almost choked to death on a pretzel - outlaw'em. If we don't want weapons in the courthouse how come there are at least 5 pistol packing people in the courthouse according to the above article? So who are they and why are they not subject to the rules the rest of us are? I've heard Rob Brown packs - so who are the other 4 he's so damn scared of???

Most of the problems in the court system is a direct result of liberal judges rewritng the law to suit the agenda they want pushed.

These judges are responsible for your not being able to pack your gun Donna.

If you want to change the law so you can carry your gun in your purse, vote Pelosi, Boxer, Fienstien, Chesbourogh, and Thompson out and put politicians that follow the constitution into office.

Nowhere does it say they were allowed inside with the weapon, it just says they were not confiscated.I guess we should just get back to the Old West ways, I am sure it was a better time.
About time!

Wild West Nostalgia? I think it still is that way around here. But I am glad they took steps to protect the people that use the courthouse. God knows it's nice to feel safe on jury duty!

When was the last time someone took a gun into that building and used it on another person? I had fingernail clipers and a small pocket knife and told I could not have them, now thats fear. Magnum,I care not to carry a gun into that place but a system that feels the need for protection and on the other hand try to control the citizens,we live in the same world they do.So if it makes you feel safer, good but hear this if someone is out to get you there is no way to stop it.You will leave that building sometime. There is alot of lying sacks of garbage down there. Is flak vest next for all?
Bearer it isn\'t my gun

I object to leaving at the courthouse doors - it is my right to not be subject to unwarranted searches and seizures by a government that a)either doesn't trust me or b)is so screwed up that they fear the people they are supposed to serve. Give up freedom for security and get neither. Comrade.
Who are you kidding?

I can't help but laugh out loud at this absurdly ignorant comment. It would appear that this doofus, bearer, is suggesting that the non-liberal faction of our governance, the conservatives, are following the constitution at all.

You might want to turn off that hate radio for a few minutes, read the constitution and then take a stroll down memory lane for the last eight years there bubba.
Here's a short list of stuff to look for:
Executive orders
Surveillance of citizens without cause
Posse Comitatus
Unitary executive

Educate yourself, don't just regurgitate your Rove inspired hallucinations. Is our educational system really that deficient Bearer?

A general rule in life is once someone starts name calling you know they have already lost.

What exactly does Bush have to do with judges in CA?

I thought so.
bearer please indulge.

There are those of us that are of the view you change the Constitution by the amendment process not by law. To do so the system becomes tyrants and the citizens are subjects to the well of those that come after. The law gives voice that its our Constitution that is subservient and a statute must be present to insure those rights. So you have local thugs that takes a law "that its a personnel matter" and can't talk about it to justify the lose of my rights. If true name calling can be justied.Liars Brown,Lewis,Farrington,Robey and Smith are examples. I'm James Henderson and I told the truth.
