When will Shannon Edmonds be charged with any offense? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Aqeela El-Amin Bakheit
Tuesday, 03 April 2007

We are all aware, from newspaper accounts and from firsthand information acquired in the courtroom, that Renato Hughes has been charged with the murder of childhood friends Christian Foster and Rashad Williams, although he was not the shooter.

However, we are equally aware that Shannon Edmonds admitted shooting to death both Foster and Williams. We are also aware that, to date, Shannon Edmonds has yet to be charged with any offense.

In that vein, we pose the below questions:

1) Is Shannon Edmonds to be charged with any offense?

2) When did it become lawful for any person to shoot in the back (multiple times) and kill, two fleeing, alleged robbers? [Record Bee, 1/29/2006]

3) Has it "yet been determined whether Edmonds shot the men [Foster and Williams] while they were inside the house, outside the house or both," since that was a factor that would help determine whether Edmonds would be prosecuted, according to an article which appeared in the Press Democrat, December 10, 2005?

4) Was the weapon (Browning automatic) used by Edmonds, legally obtained and registered?

5) What about the lighting conditions in the predawn hours of Dec. 8, 2005?

6) Is Edmonds an expert marksman?

7) What about the quantity of marijuana found and taken from the Edmonds residence?

8) What is the legal amount of medical marijuana in Lake County?

9) Did Edmonds have more than the legal limit of medical marijuana, and for what purpose? According to an investigative officer of the Clearlake Police Department, from testimony given and reported in the Record-Bee (1/19/2006), he (the officer) "call(ed) the five bags of marijuana found and a not quite-full zip bag of the substance 'an acceptable amount,' with an overall street value of less than $5,000."

He continued by stating, "It could have been for sale, but five bags of marijuana is secondary in my opinion. I was called out to a double homicide investigation. While I was investigating the double homicide, I confiscated the marijuana."

10) Why was there no investigation done with regard to the amount of marijuana found at the residence of Edmonds after the killing of these two young men?

And, (11) Why wasn't the person identified by Edmonds, to a Clearlake Police Department officer, at the scene of the shooting, detained until the investigators could sort out “who did what to whom” and definitively determine if the person Edmonds identified was complicit in this incident, as Edmonds stated in front of the officer?

Finally, Lake County's chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) expects the fair dispensation of justice, in the Hughes matter, by the judicial system.

We believe, based on the above unanswered questions, that Edmonds and the unidentified fourth person at the scene of the crime on Dec. 8, 2005, should have been arrested and have to await their day in court.

Aqeela El-Amin Bakheit is president of the Lake County branch of the NAACP.

Hughes and his pals went to Edmunds home with the intent of robbing him, and in the course of doing that they beat and threatened Edmunds and his family members. You do that to me and I'll shoot you in the front, back or any other spot I can. Hughes and his pals were criminal thugs who knew that what they were doing could have lethal consequences, so it was their choice that caused the two deaths, don't blame Edmunds for that.

However, Hughes has been over-charged, robbery, assault and burglery are enough to keep him behind bars for a good long time. Hopkins has been as bad as Luck in charging people, they are all over the place on that, with some way under-charged and some way over-charged. Many of the people over-charged are black, and many under-charged are white, but hard numbers are needed to show a genuine bias. The DA department is a mess, with a long history of homophobic and religious zealotry that taints their work, and there are strong signs of racism as well.

As Smurf has pointed out, Hughes and his pals went to the Edmund's home to commit a felony. Under THE LAW Hughes is charged with murder because he and the others were committing a felony at the time of the deaths.

Don't forget, according to reports, these felons used a baseball bat on one of the residents.

The D.A.'s office is doing a great job--just wish there were fewer plea bargains!

consider this: recently a white guy high on meth goes to a friend of mine's home and waits for him with a gun and taser because he mistakenly thought he had something to do with his dog's disapearance (yep, another dog-related problem!). the tweaker shoots him with the taser and 38, blowing his hip apart and permanately crippling him. The tweaker posted $2,500 bail and is free after laying in wait in an attempt to murder the victim.

Then a black guy here has some nut show up at his house with a handgun who started a fight with him, he takes the gun away from the attacker and shoots and wounds him (not too seriously). The black guy is charged with assault and has to put up $10, 000 for bail. This is fair? this is equal justice? What about the prominate white guy who stole $400,000 from an elderly man a couple of years back, was it fair he posted NO bail and served only one year? A black guy from Clearlake would get the same deal?Color and money don't effect the system? BS! there are certainly some twisted, bigoted people working in the DA's office, and Hopkins is under investigation RIGHT NOW for improper use of county funds, so it starts from the top and woks down from there.

A novel concept.
My personal experience with this county's legal system has entailed denial of legal representation, hearings of which I was not informed, and being blamed for the sloth of courthouse employees. Trying to fire your court appointed lawyer because he won't talk to you can result in the judge throwing you out of the hearing so you can't hear your lawyer's representation of you.
Don't dare to tinker with the Lake County legal factory grinding out its quota of convictions. They are expert enough at persecution to make you heartily sorry you did.
Which means Mr. Bakheit's questions will probably go unanswered.

The MAJORITY of people in Lake County voted Hopkins into office - so they must believe he will do a good job.

I have zero tolerance for people who run into difficulties with the law and then complain because they don't like their appointed lawyer and PROBABLY disrupted the hearing. There is a time and place for everything and disrupting the court is not one of them.

Race does not matter. The law matters. Each instance related by Smurf is comparing apples to oranges. Bottom line on both is that if either EVER gets to trial it will be the jury who determines the outcome---and I don't see a jury convicting someone who injures/kills a felon who invades their home.

Mr. Bakheit's questions do not need to be answered. The only point of the questions is to draw the focus AWAY from Hughes.

The NAACP needs to choose a better poster boy for their cause!

I base my opinions on what I know, you base your's on what you want to believe, that's why you give no data to back yours up. The majority of people who voted for DA didn't know a damn thing about Hopkins and he ran UNOPPOSED, so what choice did they have? Then that homophobic creep Luck gets back into the DA's office doing less work for more pay, just like his predessesor Hedstrom! Yes, the inbreeding cycle of the Lake County law enforcement syndicate goes on, leaving it's tell-tale trail of slime behind it.

Sounds like smurf has had some first hand negative experience with Lake County law enforcement. His whining sounds only sounds like sour grapes to me.

I have never had so much as a parking ticket in Lake County, and I've lived here for 14 years. I have been stopped by the police 9 or 10 times, usually for completely bogus reasons. I have also had cops lie to me big-time (yeah Lakeport, I'm looking in YOUR direction), and seen them do some really dumb things, so yeah, I have had some negative experiances. Most of the SO deputies are OK, but the rest of the gang (LP, CL and the CHP) are on a case-by-case basis with me. Most of the deputy DAs are rejects and/or homophobic religious nuts, not surprising given the pay scale, if we didn't have so many dumb criminals and clueless juries their conviction rate would be pretty feeble.
