LOWER LAKE – State and local firefighters moved quickly to suppress a fire that broke out along Highway 29 near Lower Lake Monday afternoon.

The fire reached approximately 182 acres, Cal Fire reported late Monday evening. Earlier in the day, acreage estimates had reached 300 acres, but officials said that number was scaled back due to better mapping.

Cal Fire's Incident Command Center reported that the fire was dispatched at 2:18 p.m.

The fire necessitated shutting down a portion of Highway 29 near Diener and Manning Flat as firefighters worked to contain it.

California Highway Patrol Officer Adam Garcia said Point Lakeview at one point was being used as an alternate route. However, that road also was closed at about 3:16 p.m., with the fire reportedly cresting the ridge.

CHP reported shortly before 6 p.m. that Point Lakeview could be reopened. CHP reported that Highway 29 itself was reopened shortly after 9 p.m.

Cal Fire led the suppression effort, with five air tankers, three helicopters, 11 fire engines, six bulldozers and five hand crews, along with resources from local fire districts, including a five-engine strike team that was called for before shortly before 4 p.m.

Witnesses at the scene reported large Cal Fire air tankers were dropping retardant on the fire, with helicopters also making water drops.

The air tankers were released at 6:46 p.m., with the helicopters released by 7:30 p.m., according to reports from the scene.

Power lines were down at the scene, with some onscene reports indicating the possibility of a blown transformer.

Pacific Gas and Electric spokesperson Jana Morris said that 4,800 customers served by the company's Konocti power substation – serving areas including Kelseyville and Cobb – were out of power mid-afternoon.

The outage's cause, said Morris, appeared to be the downed power lines, but why the power lines had fallen was still being investigated.

She said at 2:35 p.m. PG&E received a call from a customer who reported a loud noise that they thought had come from a transformer, but Morris could not confirm Monday that a transformer had in fact blown.

All 4,800 customers had power restored to them by 5 p.m., Morris said. Cobb resident Roger Kinney reported that the power was off in Cobb about two hours.

Vehicles being routed onto Highway 175 to avoid the fire encountered a solo vehicle crash on Highway 175 near Cobb, which took place just after 4 p.m. and resulted in the vehicle and some nearby grass catching fire.

Cal Fire, which took the call, reported the fire was very small and quickly contained. The vehicle was destroyed. Minor injuries to the occupants were reported by CHP.

Officials with Cal Fire said late Monday that the 182-acre fire scene was still being mopped up. The downed power lines are believed to be a contributing factor, Cal Fire reported.

Kudos To CDF
written by Ruthie, August 18, 2008
 I am monitoring the scanner and can hear the crews being placed and I can only say...I am so thankful we have the CDF personel we have in Lake County they are the best. I feel so confident if I ever needed them I would indeed be in the best hands.

that LCN is the best, news when you need it, not when it's conveinant for the paper to get something out on it long after it's news. Judging by the wind I've seen today this looks like a tree limb brought down the power lines, the one thing for sure is our firefighters were right on top of it and doing a heck of a job-thank all of you for your fine work!
Just to clarify

This fire is really in Lower Lake and is part of Lake Fire Protection District. Most likely there will be a bird or a squirrel on the ground under the pole. The agencies involved were quick to respond and got a handle on the fire right away! Good news for all the local residents! Kudos to all involved!
Agree...mostly

While I agree with Ruthie, I'm also thankful to all of the fire personnel in Lake County....but does that make it right for Cal-Fire to drive through Lucerne at 65mph as they did at about 2:45pm today? I know they have to get to a call ASAP, but thats dangerous driving.

Its a good thing Darryll Watkins has spearheaded the campaign in ClearLake Riviera to get rid of the brush around all the houses.

I'm sorry. He goes by "Kruk Ed Straight" and if you don't know him, you're better off for it. Don't worry he'll chime in here soon. Probably something like "the burning of people's houses is God's revenge on those sinner." You'll see.

Too close for comfort

I just have to say the fire crews have done another INCREDIBLE job for getting this fire somewhat if not under control. It's a scary when you have bombers flying so close to the house and can see the smoke headed your way, but when the smoke starts to lighten up..all you can do is say THANK YOU and start unpacking.

once again LCN comes through. I just came back from the top of the third tee on the riviera golf course where there is good view of the fire. I turned on my computer after the electricity came back and there you were with updated info on the fire.
Thanks !

did you have a radar gun pointed at the same fire truck i saw traveling through Lucerne??? They "appeared" to be exceeding the speed limit but they were SO not going 65 mph. I don't mean to sound crass, but they are either criticized for going to fast or not getting there fast enough. :?:

I came here from Napa! No thanks on having them take over! I left because of drive by shootings! Give me Lake County any day!

I share your opinionfor moving here... came here from Richmond, the nightly shootings in the Iron Triangleand below 23rd were getting carried over to our once quiet neighborhood on the other side of town.

I was behind the engine as it was leaving Lucerne. I spent 9 years driving HET's in the Army, then 17 driving fire engines (I still do), 6 of those years teaching. They werte driving way beyond a safe speed. I'd rather they got there safely, at a lower speed than not got there because of a speeding accident.

That is not to say Lake County does not need some changes but IF we are living here we should take that responsibility. Too many complain and not enough try to make things better. Just like this fire. Many come together to fix it and from many different places. Too bad we do not do the same for the "fires" that need "fixing" to make this places a better place to live

State Law
written by Merge, August 19, 2008
Well if you were a teacher, then you should know that it is acceptable to be in excess of basic speed laws by 10mph. So if they were on hwy 29, which the last time I checked was posted at 55, then 65 would be acceptable. In addition, why is there always critism about our driving from those that are not involved in the event. I have been doing this job long enough in a real metropolitan area to know that out driving to and from calls is our major killer. We train, re-educate, and at times terminate those that do not comply with EVOC standards. I get real tired of those that have a bit education coming down on those that have more.

thanks to all the firefighters ,
i live 1/4 mile fron the fire last night and all i can say is thank folks without brave people like you we would be in a sorry mess
and for all the people who do nothing but complain get out there with a hose and shovel and stop whinning
trust
written by ecco, August 19, 2008
i think what you need to do is trust in the fact that these guys train for this. it is their job. and if they think they can drive that fast to get the job done, so be it. the key factor to look at here is "QUICK RESPONSE".
The faster you go, the better!

Incorrect statement. Yolo County secured water rights back in 1912, but they do not own the body of water known as Clear Lake. The state of California owns Clear Lake and is under public trust.

Yolo County has the right to draw water from the lake for their agricultural use, but that amount is dictated by several decrees pertaining to the level of the lake between May 1st and October 31st.

Lake County residents, with property lining the lake, have riparian water rights to draw water from the lake, but that doesn't mean they own the water, as you have claimed.

Next time do your homework so you do not make false statements.
