MIDDLETOWN – Students from Middletown High School were standouts in a recent national academic competition.

The 44th annual National Skills and Leadership Conference was held in Kansas City, Mo., from June 23 to June 27.

Representing the Middletown High School Chapter 102 delegation were advisor Daniel Renninger; Justin Carrillo and Jeremy Hoskins, both National Voting Delegates; and Tyler O’Brien, representing the state of California in the Technical Computer Applications contest.

SkillsUSA is a national, professional, student-run organization in which students of both high school and college work together with teachers and industry representatives to ensure a skilled workforce for America’s future.

Currently, SkillsUSA partners with more than 1,000 businesses, industries, and labor organizations to achieve a skilled workforce to meet 21st century American needs. In each of its members SkillsUSA creates and fosters a strong work ethic, pride in the dignity of work and respect for the individual.

This year, Tyler O’Brien won the state gold medal in Technical computer applications and went on to represent California at the national contest where he placed ninth in the nation.

He had competed at the national level for the past two years; he was formerly a state officer and chapter president and is now an alumnus of the organization.

O’Brien said it was awesome to be at the conference with 15,000 other SkillsUSA members and fill up a convention center that was nine football fields long.

Contests ranged from automotive service technology to welding and everything in between.

O’Brien competed in technical computer applications, a contest designed to test the competitor in areas of oral presentation, networking capabilities, use of the computer in an office setting and collaborative solutions.

Upon the completion of the contest, O’Brien placed ninth in the nation and was awarded a work-force ready certification.

Also present at the conference were Jeremy Hoskins and Justin Carrillo who represented California in all matters of national SkillsUSA business as national voting delegates. This was their first time going back to the national conference and both were amazed at the enormity of the conference and plan on attending it next year. Carrillo is also a California state officer.

Renninger, the Middletown Chapter advisor, accompanied the delegation on his fourth trip back to the national conference. He said he greatly enjoys collecting the pins from the other states and displaying the full pin collection in his classroom.

O’Brien said that it was because of his advisor that he even joined SkillsUSA and for that he really thanks him. A delegation from Lower Lake was also present at the national conference.
