Christwitz: Markowski makes valuable contributions to PEG Channel PDF Print E-mail
Written by Barbara Christwitz

This letter is to express appreciation for cable TV 8 Manager Allen Markowski. Recently people have told me how pleased they are to have viewed fascinating programming on our local PEG (stands for public, education, government) Channel. They have especially enjoyed watching the history of Lake County as seen through the eyes of local Native American historians. The film is called “Hinthel Gaahnula,” translated as “Indian Speaks.” We have Allen Markowski to thank for volunteering his time, expertise and enthusiasm for the past several months as station manager.

Recently Allen ran a wire from the broadcasting cubicle of Clearlake City Hall to the Clearlake City Hall Chambers. He then broadcast live the Clearlake City Council meeting of June 12. Allen was eager to help those who were not able to attend the City Council view the public meeting. He felt this program to be in harmony with the report of the Clearlake Vision Task Force pp. 17, 18, 21 and 22, a report endorsed by the city council in 2007. It can be found online at http://theclearlakevisiontaskforce.wikispaces.com/Report. Refer to headings of Education and Services for Seniors or e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

The report cites requests from the public for live broadcasting of city and county meetings. Allen also followed the members manual of the PEG Committee, which is currently a work in progress to guide his broadcasting decisions. This document may be viewed at http://laketv8.wikispaces.com/Members+Manual.

Allen extends his apologies to anyone whom he surprised by filming of this public meeting and now realizes how important it is to warn anyone present that their words and actions are being recorded and broadcast live. He assures citizens that he will follow the new proper protocol in accordance with the PEG Channel 8 Policies and Procedures Manual as well as instate ways to mute anyone who would use profanity at a public meeting. I am certain that our Clearlake City Council and the PEG Board will find positive ways to assure that as many citizens of Clearlake as possible be able to become fully informed of their city’s business through the avenue of live broadcast.

For anyone interested in becoming active in TV 8 and its local broadcasts please attend both PEG Board and PEG Committee meetings. Regular PEG Board meetings are open to the public and are held each third Wednesday at 7 a.m. at the El Grande Hotel. Regular PEG Committee meetings are held each first Wednesday of the month at 2 p.m. at the Clearlake City Hall Chambers.

For more information, contact Barbara Christwitz, member of PEG Committee, 995-0940.

Barbara Christwitz lives in Clearlake.

and way past time -- now let's get the members of the Lakeport City Council to operate in the same spirit of open accountable government - one that includes it's constituents.

I agree, taxismom, there is no excuse for the government of Lakeport or any government to not be accountable or accessible to its people.

I even gave them a webcam months ago (and the offer/information to help to hook it up) to create a live streaming website for free... because not everyone has access to cable but everyone has access to the internet via libraries and other public places which provide internet services and I was really trying to do my part to make things a bit more accessible for myself and others. Their response was that it wasn't in their "budget" and they would be putting it on the back burner until the budget comes up again. The question on my mind is, how much of a budget do all those kids have who are streaming their live video shows on a daily basis? Out of curiosity, I typed into Google the words "broadcast free streaming" and I found a multitude of options to create a streaming live video broadcast show which can then be archived FOR FREE. So, the "budget" is not a very good excuse. But, then, what can we expect from a government that told me they didn't have the technology to even copy a cassette tape.

The thing is, I have to wonder why we are even leaving it up to the government to broadcast these meetings. They ARE public meetings and by law the information presented in those meetings is public information. We really don't need the government to decide to broadcast the meetings nor do we need their permission to broadcast these meetings ourselves. In fact, if I had the physical capability to make the commitment to broadcast them, I would do it myself. I just can't imagine that there isn't a single person out there that has the technology and the aptitude to make our government more accessible.

Please be patient. Lake County is playing "catch up" right now when it comes to technological innovation.

Thank God for people like Allen Markowski who is volunteering his time and effort to help the county catch up. Allen is also active in the Clear Lake Food Coop. Have you ever heard of something called "wikinomics?" Well, it has arrived in Lake County. If you do not know what it entails, do a Google search and find out more.

Last September, the Middletown Merchants introduced digital signage to local residents, thanks to Kevin Comora, president of Vizicast Multimedia. What Comora did not know at the time was that Lake County's signage ordinance is 20 years out-of-date. There is no mention of digital technology in the entire ordinance. Therefore, it is not allowed.
But, a caring and informed public can change that situation. According to Lake County Administrator Kelly Cox, just a few months are need to write and get a new signage ordinance approved once the public demands it. Digital signage is green technological innovation and should be a welcome addition to Lake County. It will help save more of the forest as well as energy.

Meanwhile, guess where you can find interesting evidence of technological innovation in Lake County? Try Ting's Thai Kitchen in the Hardester's Shopping Center in Hidden Valley Lake. There you can not only eat your fill of delicious Thai cuisine, but go online while you wait for your food to be prepared. Just be sure to bring your laptop or mobile device with you. Ting's is a FREE Wi-Fi hot spot.

While there are other FREE Wi-Fi hot spots in Lake County, Ting's is definitely unique. It is the ONLY FREE Wi-Fi hot spot currently offering splash page advertising for local businesses. This advertising can take the form of print, audio and video. And, it comes at a very reasonable price.

But, for Ting's, the technological innovation does not begin and end with Internet access. You can sign up to follow Ting's on you cell phone via Twitter.com. Just go get yourself a free Twitter account at http://twitter.com and then go to Ting's Twitter site at http://twitter.com/tings and click on the "follow" link. In addition, Ting's has a very interesting Squidoo lens at www.squidoo.com/TTK.

This is advertising, we have ad packages for that. Otherwise if we let you do this then we have to let everyone do it and that would really be a bore. So please restrain yourself.

Thanks,
Admin

I go to restaurants to enjoy good food and the company of friends. If you want great Thai food, I highly recommend the Thai place in Lucerne (in that funky Swiss Chalet building on Highway 20), with a beautiful view of the lake, excellent service, very reasonable prices, and gracious hosts. I always bring out-of-town guests there, and it always gets raves reviews from them.
